______________

Altissa didn't have the best of time growing up. Being a near exact replica of her mother, she was expected to take over the same responsibilities as her. A task that Altissa loathed. It was not uncommon for the rebellious Coatl to sneak off in the dead of night and watch the moon float over the sky. It infuriated her mother greatly when she awoke to find her daughter missing, which, of course, is the entire reason that she did it.

This isn't to say that her mother didn't get her way at times either. The clan was well off and had no issues having a bodyguard watch the Coatl and make sure that she completed her studies. Finances, histories, nobility, book after book after boring book pasted in front of her eyes. The worst point of their relationship was when Altissa came of mating age and started feeling the call of the Coatl homeland, the Emberglow Hearth. The clan lair could be filled with the grating sound of Coatl humming as mother and daughter argued. Eventually, Altissa just left to answer the call of her blood without telling another soul.

There was only one problem with her plan... Fire did not take kindly to Ice.

Most Coatls traveled back to the Ashfall Wastes in flocks. This was no the case for the lone Altissa who had to frequently stop to rest and cool off. Nothing in her mother's lessons included physical activities. It was during one of these stops that she closed her eye for a moment as the heat was not being kind. A low growl caused her to snap her eyes open to be greeted with the sight of a pride of Flamerest Fiendcats.

Altissa panicked and froze as the circle of flaming felines close in on her. As closed her eyes and hid her head behind her wings like a frightened hatchling. She heard something leap into the air and wished that her mother was here, and more importantly, that she had listened to her more. The pained snarling of a cat broke her from her paralyzing fear. She peeked out from between her wing and saw her mother with the leader of the pride pinned to the ground. She gave no regard to the cat's flaming mane burning the feathers on her arm. Her only focus was protecting her daughter.

icev1.png Like a bright flash, the moment of clarity was over. The rest of the pride swarmed to protect their leader. Altissa could only watch in horror as her mother tried to defend herself from the cats, however, her mother was also from the Ice flight. It was a losing battle. Altissa heard screaming, it took her a moment to realize it was herself.

Just when it seemed like all hope was lost, three warriors from her clan arrived and started the counterattack. The pride quickly took of the situation. Two weak Coatls was a much different thing than three dangerous dragon warriors. The pride took off between the rocks, leaving Altissa's mother lying there. Altissa rushed to her side. Large patches of feathers were burned away and there was a worrying amount of deep scratches. A green aura surrounded one of the warriors as they cast a healing spell on the wounded Coatl. Her condition stabilized, but it still didn't look good.

Altissa took over her mother's duties for the next few months while she recovered. She was spectacular at her job, her mother's lessons were well taught, but she got a few sideways glances from the other dragons in the clan. She couldn't meet their gaze. It was her fault that her mother was so wounded. As soon as her mother was recovered well enough to resume her role.
Altissa left. Her rebellious spirit was culled after her encounter. She now strives to serve her new clan and redeem herself. Her new home was an ancient Wind Clan. She manages the finances and resources of the clan. Not a single gold coin leaves the hoard without it first being checked through Altissa.

She does he job well, but the clan leader constantly has to tell her to take a break at times.
Something that Altissa is reluctant to follow.

Altissa has never been much of a physical fighter, nor is she magically gifted. Her strength relies on her wit and charm to get through any difficulty she may have. Having the keys to the piggy bank also helps.

GPHYKK6.png Shapes danced with the shadows cast by the smoldering hot fire. Altissa was a small hatchling. Her wings raised up over her head to offer what meek protection they could. The wooden structure covering her den was ablaze with fire. The heat made the air shimmer and caused one to question what they actually saw. Little Altissa stumbled through where the flames were the weakest.

A sharp crack overhead made her shriek in fear as a raftor came crashing down over her. One end of the falling support caught on another beam, saving the young dragoness from being crushed. It didn't stop a shower of hot embers knocked loose from the remains of the wooden strut from raining on her, singeing her skin under her coat of feathers.

She ran forward in pain, flapping her wings to knock the painful residue from herself. That's when the sound of a struggle reached her ears. The feral sounds of a cat on the hunt as well as a dragon shrieking in pain. A deep cord of fear ran through Altissa, but she could not turn back. Her limbs moved of their own accord as they took her out of the burning building and to the main clearing of the clan's lair.

There her mother stood. Most of her feathers were burned away and the rest were matted together with a dark liquid. Two fiendcats jumped at her. One dug its claws into her right shoulder and the other took a flaming paw to her head. Altissa's mother spun around and fell to the ground looking at her daughter. The pride of cats surrounded the downed dragon, ready to strike the last blow. Altissa was frozen in place, unable to advert her eyes or run for help, or even cry out in terror.

"This is all your fault." The voice was low enough to be a whisper, but Altissa heard each word as though they were shouted at her.

"No, no, no! I didn't want this." Her squeaky voice replied back.

"This is all your fault." The voice repeated again, this time coming from her gravely wounded mother. Altissa was able to take a step back. As her mother's form rose to her feet and started walking towards her. The fiend cats started to fill in the sides as the group progressed towards Altissa.

"This is all your fault." This time the chant was taken on by the fiendcats as well. A haunting chorus of rough raspy voices.

"No, no it's not. I just wanted to be me!" Altissa tried to counter.

"This is all your fault!" The deafening wave of sounds was getting louder and completely drowned out Altissa's feeble excuses.

"No, no, no, no..." Altissa started to repeat to herself as she curled into a ball. The swarming mass of shapes was all around her, surrounding her, all the while, still chanting at a deafening tone! "ALTISSA WAKE UP!"

The Coatl blinked her eyes open. She was in her nest in an underground cave. The walls were made of stone, and certainly not on fire. She was a full grown dragoness and not the scared little hatchling of her dreams. Standing before her was Lunatia. One of the Vokan Clan's Mage Medics, who had a very concerned look on her face. "Are you alright, Altissa?" The Pearlcatcher asked. "It's nearly midday and Aorea still needs an update on the vault resources after finishing paying off the prize fees for the Mistral Jamboree story contest as well as the status of the hoard after paying for some new kites to come in and be trained." She summarized.

"Yeah. I'm fine." Altissa half-lied to the well-meaning dragon. "Just some bad memories, resurfacing as a nightmare."

The look on the other dragon's face said that she didn't believe her, but accepted it anyway. "Either way, its going to be a long day. If you need a break, all you need to do is ask." She said, trying to help once more.

"I'll be fine." Altissa insisted, perhaps a little harsher than she intended. Lunatia shrugged and left the Coatl's den room so she could get ready. As Altissa donned the hierlooms from her flight, she thought to herself, Afterall, they are just dreams... Yet she couldn't even fool herself.
