![]() The daughter of the sorceress Sae-Yin Ryong and her mate, the warrior-lord Makai, Jeong-Jun was always her father's daughter. She grew up at his knee, following along when he would drill his soldiers, and the men adored her. They treated her as a little sister, and in time, she learned all the soldier's arts - to wield a bow and sword, to fight hand-to-hand, and to hunt and track aside the hounds. Among the soldiers she learned discipline as will - the iron mettle that let her father guide his soldiers into battle, and the trust and faith that would have his men follow him even into death. Those were the traits she learned to prize above all others, and it was little surprise to anyone that, when she reached her majority, she chose to follow her father into the army. She rose quickly through the ranks. Her father distanced himself, not wanting the appearance of favoritism to taint her achievements, but no one could dispute the comportment with which she carried herself or the skill with which she fought, and soon the young dragoness received her first command - a small outpost of soldiers, only twenty men, keeping guard over a long-disputed territorial border. It was supposed to be an easy assignment - a chance for the fledgling officer to stretch her wings and gain some experience working with the soldiers under her command. With a cold winter approaching, it should have been a few simple months of patrolling and training. It was not to be. ![]() |

![]() It was on Winternight, the longest night of the year, that a scout landed in their encampment panting and breathless. The men hurried to get hot tea and a blanket for him, while Jeong-Jun strode forward to receive his report. It was ill news indeed - he had seen a line of drakes moving for the border under cover of twighlight, wings dark against the snow. This close to the border, they would be across it by dusk, and within range of the aerie itself well before the sun could rise - an attack that no one would forsee. With snow to muffle their sounds, and the dark to conceal them, they would fall on the soldiers there as if invisible. Leaving the injured scout to rest, and sending a flier to the aerie, Jeong-Jun and the rest of her men rallied to strike out against the invaders. Teeth cut and gleaming, skills sharp from training, they dove to the attack from above, never minding the howling, arctic winds. They fell on their prey like an avalanche, and by the time reinforcements could arrive from the aerie, their unsuspecting foe had been driven back or slain, blood staining the snow black in the moonlight. It was only the first of many battles - the failed raid turned the simmering territorial dispute into a full-on border war, and as winter faded into summer, Jeong-Jun had many chances to prove herself on the battlefield and off. But it was that first victory that stayed with her longest, and earned her the epithet "Snowtalon" - a name which gives heart to her soldiers and sends chills down her enemies' spines. ![]() |
