Biography

Sawayama Castle was a castle in Hikone Province and a major military stronghold in the Sengoku Era. The Azai Clan held it until their ruination, followed by Ishida Mitsunari. The traitorous Kobayakawa Hideaki mounted an assault on the castle after the battle of Sekigahara. Though Mitsunari's brother defended it, the castle's other defenders surrendered it. Ii Naomasa, a general of Tokugawa Ieyasu, occupied the castle and then demolished it so that he could use its foundation stones for his own castle project. All that is left of Sawayama is a forested hill and some rubble.
