~This Dragon came from Myths Children Hatchery~

Name: Séraphine
Meaning of name: Of French decent, meaning, "Burning ones"

Lore:

Seraphine clutched the shimmering, translucent pearl she always carried with her. She wished, and not for the first time, that it would lend her some kind of luck or magical powers. Perhaps help her become less clumsy. Or, even better, make her parents love her enough to keep her.

It had been two days since Seraphine was born. Her parents, having had plenty of eggs before, didn't expect anything special from this one. Like all their other eggs, Seraphine's egg was placed in a dark, warm room. All the eggs were wrapped with dry, crumbly, brown leaves. Unfortunately, when Brighid (Seraphim's mother) had been wrapping this egg, Seraphine's egg, there was a fire (a piece of broken glass had been left in the sunshine). Brighid grabbed the egg and ran, never having the time to finish wrapping it.

Brighid and Haruspex's eggs had always been sold for precious treasure and gems or sent to war. Each hatchling was always born with a heart full of hope and love to give to their parents. In return, they were put up for sale.

Seraphine was no exception. In just a few days, she was to be sold; Haruspex and Brighid had always favored their Pearlcatcher hatchlings, selling them instead of sending them away. Not that being sold was much better.

Seraphine could not say she was exactly thrilled to sit in the Auction House for hours and hours, eating strange mush and drinking dirty water. She was certain that even a life with her parents in the Light flight would be better than whatever her buyers had planned for her. Make her become a slave, perhaps. Send her off to war regardless of what her parents believed in.

All too soon, the day ended. The sun began to sink, touching the tips of the trees and giving up the last of its light. In a few hours, Seraphine would be riding to the Auction House in the fancy burgundy bag that every hatchling dreaded. Seraphine, being a Pearlcatcher, would be flown by Haruspex himself. Seraphine wondered if there was any last-minute acting she could do to stop Haruspex from selling her.

An hour passed. Then another one. Seraphine couldn't sleep. Only three more hours, she thought. Three more hours, and then Haruspex will come and scoop me up into that horrid bag. Seraphine lay there, waiting. Time crawled slowly. Seraphine filled with dread with each minute.

Footsteps. Footsteps, coming closer, closer, closer. Haruspex has finally come to take me away. Her father walked slowly, taking his time as he stepped over the ruins of the once-grand palace. He had just slithered around a dusty, crumbling pillar when Seraphine heard her father's voice. "Come," he whispered, as not to wake anybody else. "We don't have all night."

Seraphine tried to remember all the sweet, touching things she had planned to say to Haruspex to convince him to let her stay. But the lump in her throat made it impossible to let out even the smallest squeak of noise.

The rest of the night went by in a blur. Seraphine recalled the world going dark and black. She remembered the velvet of the bag brushing against her scales, and a cold wind blowing in as Haruspex opened the bag. Then, the dusty smell of the Auction House. Dragons. Tons of dragons. All slithering around her, inspecting her, poking her all around her sore, tired body. Then, once again, everything was dark.
.....................................................................................................................................

It had been years since Seraphine last saw her family.

She was taken in by some kind Arcane dragons, willing to spend however much money to keep her take her home before any cruel queens looking for servants did. For this, Seraphine was thankful, but that sunny day, she couldn't help wondering how her parents had turned out.

A gentle breeze blew into Seraphine's cave through the open windows. Sunlight danced on the top of her table.

Seraphine's ink-covered claws were hovering over a piece of parchment as she wondered what to write. Finally, she decided on something simple.

My dear parents,

I hope you are well. Please accept this bag of 100 coins as a gift. It is a small portion (an incredibly small portion, might I add) of the fortune the dragons I now live with have spent to keep me. No doubt you should be ashamed of yourselves for getting rid of so many innocent hatchlings, but let us not dwell on it any longer. I have forgiven you, Haruspex, for taking me away that night. And Brighid, I have forgiven you, as well. However, I still hope you are thinking about what you have done. No amount of apologies shall ever appease me. And yet, your silence in the last few years has.

Do not try to run from the truth, my dear parents. I know you can not truly be bad dragons; No hatchling is born as horrid as you have been.

Hold this bag of coins knowing that a dragon, your daughter, no less, has forgiven you. Best of luck to you in the years to come.

Seraphine decided not to sign her name. Her parents could live with the guilt forever, having no one to write to, no one to apologize to. And if they did decide to apologize, they would have to write to all of their hatchlings; Every single one of them. All those hatchlings deserved apologies.

Haruspex and Brighid, upon receiving the letter, had wept silently until they became pure stone. And perhaps that was for the best.
