IRL Lore: Fermi I was an experimental fast breeder reactor that was designed to produce more nuclear fuel than she spent. However, features designed to make her safer actually led to an accident in which she had a partial meltdown.

People became frightened, especially when a man who specialized in writing books about ghosts and UFOs wrote a very theatrical and technically inaccurate book called "We Almost Lost Detroit" about the accident.

We did not almost lose Detroit. Nobody was hurt, and no radiation was released. The only injury was to the reactor core itself, which was just an expensive problem that frustrated Fermi I's operators. But the damage was already done to nuclear energy- people were convinced that the technology was too dangerous and too touchy.

Fermi I would be shut down in the 70s without ever achieving full power.

Her sister, Fermi II, operates on the same site now. She is a boiling water reactor, and safely produces electricity for much of Southeastern Michigan. Including Detroit.

Her operating site is a certified wildlife habitat for many species of birds including bald eagles and ospreys, and preserves crucial prairie lakeshore.
