you can't surface if you can't swim

Overview

Basil suffers from haunting memories that he is not sure are real or hallucinations. The spiral doesn't enjoy new company, but he appreciates his close friends and confides in them when his emotions are too much to handle. He lives in a cavern deep within the Leviathan Trench where he slumbers most of the time, finding the silence of the depths to be comforting. He finds it difficult to sleep elsewhere and suffers from insomnia otherwise. To most, he is simply a resident sea monster.

Within the trench, few creatures disturb the homes of others. His only visitors are Seroxin and other clanmates that live nearby. On the occasion when a stranger does intrude -- either by accident or in hopes of finding an easy meal -- Basil is not afraid to show aggression and bare fangs. He doesn't enjoy it, but thankfully his fearsome appearance alone is enough to show most others that he isn't prey.

Basil hates his own reflection. That's another advantage of living in the depths. No mirrors. No light. All the maws on his body are 'functional' -- they can salivate and bite, but everything is spat out as they do not link to his organs. His extra eyes are decorative. They can follow movement and it unnerves enemies, but Basil cannot actually see with them. He has no recollection of why he looks the way he does, but he has a faint memory that he did not always look this way. At least he thinks so.

Memory

Basil wakes up in a cold sweat, calling out for his mate with an outstretched arm. Wait, what was her name again? His arm fell limp. His mind turned blank.

Did... did I even have a mate?

Maybe he did, once upon a time. Then why can't I remember anything about her? There was one thing he was sure of: he never had children. If he did, he knew he wouldn't forget about them.

The darkness was comforting, as was the silence. His cavern was the same as it always was. He slept on a small makeshift bed made of knotted seaweed. It definitely wasn't as comfortable as a mattress he once tried in the land above, but no matter how comfy of a bed he slept on, he lost the ability to fall asleep anywhere else but here.

How many years has it been since he's lived down here? Maybe ten? Maybe... a hundred? No, that couldn't be.

He vigorously shook his head in an attempt to stop himself from overthinking. Which of his memories were real? Which were falsified? Which were whispered to him by the demons of sleep? Can he even be sure of what is real anymore? Basil felt his heart starting to race, but then took a few breaths.

He is alive. That is real. He grasped the cold ground around him. That is real, too. He just has to remind himself of what is real.

Basil closed his eyes, wishing that sleep would quickly overtake him again.

Unfortunately, it wouldn't be that easy as the thought of his mate quickly crept back to his thoughts. Why... why do I keep thinking about her? About someone that doesn't exist? If she really existed, then it must be proven. All he needed was a name. A face.

Instead, he felt a sensation. He felt the warmth of someone that might have once brushed his face out of love. He heard a voice speaking to him but could not make out the words. He felt his heart ache as he knew these memories weren't his.

They couldn't be.... they couldn't be...
