Tourmaline was one of the clan's founders along with Ancaladar. When she was younger, she had several nests with him, but as his secretive and seemingly timid nature revealed itself, she drifted from him and found a better mate in Chrysoberyl. After a clan civil war, she usurped power from Ancaladar and lead the clan to victory against Almandine.

Tourmaline takes her role as clan leader very seriously and acts as a lookout for the clan during the day. After changing from a Tundra to a Skydancer, her ability to smell what flight a dragon is from became an empathetic ability which allowed her to not only sense a dragon's flight, but also tell their motives. Depending on what she senses, she will call for dragons of a certain alignment to take up arms and for others to hide. She is also known to send spies after dragons she suspects of trouble-making and has done so several times.

Compared to Ancaladar's methods of rule, Tourmaline is much more strict and requires reports from any dragons that leave the main lair space. Ambassadors to other flights must prove their loyalty to Crystallos before they are allowed to assist with negotiations. Those from other clans may retain loyalty to their gods, but their children must be indoctrinated into the ways of the Ice flight. While some may call it harsh, Tourmaline finds her rules rather lenient and believes all of them will keep the clan strong.
