Biography
Flashes of light and eerie sounds that you pretend you imagine, paranoia you try and convince yourself is irrational, something scratching across your shoulders, you tell yourself it's a twig. It's not just you. No one ever heeds the warning signs. They refuse to believe the cautionary tales, dismissing them as stories created to keep hatchlings in line.
While the stories you probably heard are largely the invention of mothers attempting to stop their children from running off, the basis is fact. Your "ghost stories" are not about ghosts, ghosts are more often than not harmless, unless they take a disliking to you specifically. No, the being that inspired these stories, stories of mysterious beings who haunt the realms, stories of things that hunt you from the dark corners of your lair or from behind trees in shadowy forests, is not a ghost. It is no sort of undead creature. Nor is it a spirit or the product of a curse or scientific experiment. It is, pure and simple, a monster.
But not a beast.
There is no savagery, no mindless violence or needless carnage in its work. This creature is not clumsy in its work. It is skillful and elegant. It is also kind. You don't believe that? What did I tell you about the warnings? It lets you know it's coming, gives you a chance to save yourself. But you've heard the stories, and won't believe the truth.
It chooses its prey without malice. It does not judge. It only recognizes the facts. If it chose you, there is a reason. Perhaps a deed committed in the past is your undoing, perhaps its reasoning is beyond our limited understanding. No matter, it makes sure you understand its reasoning before it finishes its work.
It has a name, and calling him an it isn't exactly polite, but you can't bear to think of it as a being like yourself. Acknowledging similarities between it and things you know would mean you would have to acknowledge that the stories I have told are possible, perhaps even plausible.
What's that? You want to know its name? Silly child, you still think this is a story. But if it's just a story why is your heart beating so fast? Why are your hands sweating? Why do you feel the need to look over your shoulder? Oh, don't worry. You are not alone.
You should have heeded the warnings.
