Hatchlings of Terminus are trained in the ways of the wasteland to infect and survive. Trained by each top dragon in the clan to help them develop their skills.

Born to Terminus's top herbalist and her scorned mate. This little one has taken after his mother, having a way with plants. Even though he is plague plants seem to thrive at his touch. Native wasteland plants do best in his care.

Fayne came to Ista to study with Arfur and Merlin. He'd already had some training from his mother and he knew how to culture plants. He had a pretty good grasp of which plants to use for which ailment, too, but he wanted more practice.

Working with the nature born Arfur had been a disaster. Their styles were too different, really. Arfur favoured innate magic, restorative tonics infused with energy from the sun and sprigs and twigs that he'd brought with him from his latest trip to the Viridian Labyrinth. He charged forwards into battle, despite all his claims at being happy solving the cuts and bruises of the clan's day-to-day life, and often left Fayne behind in the adrenaline rush.

Arfur's constant heroic pep-talks didn't really help, either; Fayne simply wasn't cut out to be on the battlefield. For a time, he'd despaired. Had Ista been the wrong place to come to? Would he have been better in the Sunbeam Ruins, or perhaps the Shrieking Wilds?

Then, he met Merlin.

The second half of Fayne's apprenticeship was mainly in the lair itself. Merlin, apparently thrilled to have found a kindred spirit, showed him where he kept the tiny allotments for his herbal supplies and reminisced with great fondness for his days in the Furnace, when saltwater couldn't rise up through a flaw in the stonework and poison the plant roots.

"Living there came with it's own challenges to plants, of course," Merlin explained with a grin. "You know, drifting embers casually setting a whole field ablaze." Fayne nodded, enraptured, and laughed just that bit too hard when Merlin told his stories.
