Biography
A L A R I C
THAEN MAGE |
|
B I O G R A P H Y
With the society of his homeland taking pride in great magical prowess, Alaric has spent his life overshadowed by the fame of his distant ancestor, Sylverski. Because of the way his culture works, Alaric's name is a legacy he can't hope to live up to, his very name a tale of his bloodline's tragic fall from power. In an attempt to restore this so dearly coveted greatness and power to his family line, the Thaen elders magically induced synesthesia in Alaric as a hatchling, hoping that the crossover of his senses would grant him an innate capability for understanding magic. This experiment was hoped to pave the way for a new age of Thaen, magically engineered to be more powerful with each successive generation, instead of their society's slow decline in power. However the experiment did not quite deliver results in the way they wanted. By the time he was a week old, his hatchling genes of poison and toxin shifted to skink and spinner, like his mother. By far the most unusual change however was the fading of his glimmering underbelly and the appearance of shimmering runes, before the emergence of swirling purple markings after that. |

Due to his synesthesia, Alaric's magic is formless, with his spells taking the appearance of cymatics rather than the traditional ordered rune circles. Merely tweaking his spell to harmonise the magic's tune, he is able to cast spells without the need for the extensive studying and memorisation of the relevant rune circles, granting him the ability to master a wide array of spells. Despite how this allows Alaric to cast stronger and more complex spells far quicker than his peers, his tutors berated him for it, urging him to abandon the use of his unprofessional, 'mangled' rune circles. Being seen as cheap or lazy shortcuts by some, and a direct rebellion against structured magic by others, Alaric quickly learnt to ignore his instinctive spell casting method, resigning himself to the arduous challenge of using rune circles. |

Due to this, most Thaen only have one child, with those having multiple seen as being desperate for power. In rare cases where a mature Thaen suddenly gains a younger sibling, their name is rescinded until that child comes of age - however it is seen as disgraceful for the parents to allow such a thing, and this situation often ends with the elder Thaen arranging the death of their younger sibling, so their name can be quickly restored. Siblings with magical power inferior to another’s are left to inherit only the name of the weakest parent, either beginning a new line from those two sole names, or, more likely, losing them forever as they marry into a stronger family, their part in their descendants’ ancestors forgotten in the glare of their brighter and more powerful partner. Through this tradition, a Thaen’s name becomes a story of their bloodline, most often depicting a fall from power, since in order to be the name passed on, a Thaen must marry below their stature. |
