“When you light a candle, you also cast a shadow.” ╰━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━╯ a figure forms in the shadows. an obscuring goblin prances across the moonlit path. the figure stops maybe five feet from you, and spreads out a deck of ominous looking cards. “Do you feel lucky?” His voice drips with venom. “N-no?” Your voice shakes, and you see your breath spiraling up into the cold fall air. The coatl humphs. “We’ll play a simple game of cards, then. As a warm up.” He smiles too wide, but you agree anyways. He spreads them out and they hover in midair. “You first.” You reach out to take a card, and the game starts. It drags on for a while, but in the end, you clear your hand and win the round. He smirks. “Now, how about a rematch?” “What? But I just-” “It was a warm up”, He hisses. “..Fine.” His smile grows wider. “High stakes. We’ll bet. If you win…?” You gulp. This couldn’t be good. “I get to go home and you leave me alone.” “Fine. If I win, you give me your soul. I’ll go first this round since I lost the warm up.” This was his plan all along, and you’d just fallen right into it. “My what?! Hold on, hold on, my soul?” He says nothing for a moment, shuffling the cards. He looks up as the cards float into the air. “Leaving the match counts as forfeiting. Therefore, I’d win. If you really value your soul, you’d at least stay for one last game of cards, wouldn’t you?” You shudder, and with a gulp, pick up your hand of cards. He emptied his hand in three turns. While you’d failed to discard more than two cards, he had somehow gotten rid of all five. “How…?” He smirks devilishly. “It’s the luck of the draw, sweetheart.” It struck you that he’d been the one to shuffle and deal the cards. Furious, you protested. “But that’s not fair! You shuffled and dealt the cards.” He turned. “If you had asked, I would have let you shuffle and deal.” He grimaced, and turned to the forest, where two imposing figures were looming. A Nocturne and an Imperial. “They’re all yours, boss.” He grins at you before seemingly evaporating. The two figures step forward. “Who-who are you?!” The Imperial growls. “I’m the Ringmaster of this freak show and this is my Mercenary.” The two close in on you, and the coatl cackles from deep within the forest. |
