The Blood Sanctum

Sensemaya' is the master of a coven of The Blood Sanctum, a secret order of mages, theologians, philosophers, and scholars who deny the existence of the deities, and any true supernatural force. Instead they search for the most basic units of magic, and the true origin of dragons. The significance of the snake, and the blood of the snake comes from the keystone theory that the snake is the most basic of the "draconiforms", and the sacred ancestor of all dragons. In the words of the founder, "All dragons are the blood of the snake, and the snake with its coils binds us as one in a sanctum of blood." Serthis are also involved in The Sanctum, as the snake is also believed to be their sacred ancestor. The role of other beastclan in Sanctum theories is hotly debated.

The other major pursuit of the Blood Sanctum is studying and finding the base force behind all magic. The leading sanctum theory is that all elements are different expressions of the same force originating not from the gods, but some natural, fundamental force. The search for this force has led to discoveries of forms of magic only somewhat linked to elements, and abundant in raw power. It is these displays of heretic power that, in the eyes of the general public, turned the Blood Sanctum from a nuisance group of degenerates to a terrifying movement that required containment. What members weren't killed were driven to secrecy. The founder of the Sanctum, a Coatl named Culebra, but primarily referred to respectfully as "the master", was said to be unfathomably powerful, even and especially after she was blinded during an experiment seeking the fundamental force after which it is rumored that the color drained from her eyes supposedly leaving her completely detached from the elements. In fear and jealousy she was killed in her sleep by her mate, Kyrie. This assassination divided the Sanctum, leading to a complicated period of vicious infighting from which the Sanctum eventually emerged significantly smaller, but unified in the martyrdom of the master. Followers of Kyrie may have survived in the shadows and are a feared enemy of The Sanctum.

Sensemaya was a close confidant to Culebra (and rumored lover), and mourns her death to this day. After Kyrie assassinated Culebra, Sensemaya was his next and unsuccessful target. Kyrie's familiar, a serthis named Ouroboros, warned Sensemaya of Kyrie's plans after a wave of guilt. He was too late to save Culebra, but his warning allowed Sensemaya to set a trap for Kyrie. Kyrie managed to escape, badly singed by Sensemaya's corrosive black magic, to rally his supporters to fight for control of the sanctum against Sensemaya and the martyrdom of Culebra.

In her memory, Sensemaya cares for Culebra's beloved pet snakes, and the serthis familiars of both Culebra and Kyrie, the lovers Apophis and Ouroboros respectively, along with her own, Apophis's sister Apep.

Sensemaya appears cruel and unfeeling, however she extends motherly instincts to her closest circle. She is dedicated to her coven and will go to great lengths to protect them.
