Blood steamed on the ice, rapidly cooling. Frostbite nudged the corpses in front of her, assessing her situation. A quick, mumbled prayer fell from her lips as she closed their eyes, assuring them that their deaths had been in the honor of something greater and larger. She scurried to the lantern, which had been badly dented in the scuffle. Its dull bronze cap had nearly been dislodged, but the reservoir at the bottom was firmly sealed, and Frostbite could hear the slosh of oil inside. She figured that if there was any dragon worth reviving, it was the Imperial in the tunnels above.

Having just made the journey to the small crevice in the ice, Frostbite returned to the Imperial swiftly, lantern clamped in her jaws. The tang of blood persisted in the back of her throat. She left the bodies where they lay--assuming her experiment with the Imperial worked, she'd be back. Already her mind was swarming, eager to experiment in the name of the Warden, sick with excitement and hunger.

Faint light filtered through the tear in the kilometer of ice above. The air and the Imperial were impossibly still. Frostbite crept up to his face. He'd died screaming. His jaw was wrenched awkwardly, and his eyes were already beginning to frost over, tiny fractals of ice spanning glossy pupils. Frostbite hesitated. She didn't know what she was doing, not really. She craned her head towards the world above. Purple evening was swallowing the sky.

She opened the lantern's reservoir. The oil had a thick, greasy smell to it, slightly viscous but volatile, valuable enough to buy a family a month's worth of food. Frostbite lit the lantern, and placed it next to the Imperial's head. The firelight snapped and crackled in his dead, dead eyes, and Frostbite began to pray.
