“A relevant quote.”

Freckle stared at his things. All of his collected memories, all together on shelves. Fertility statues, scraps of ancient leather, feathers and even bits of bones. All of these things, the memories of his trips.
Freckle smiled to himself and dusted off a silver rock, remembering picking it up out of the Arcane islands.
A soft breeze blew into his cave space, wrapping him up in its cool fingers, beckoning him outside. Out of the same old same old...
"Freckle!"
The voice came with a strong tackle, and a child's laughter.
"Hey!" Freckle laughed.
A small face looked down at him, happy as could be.
"Hey there Ives." He said smiling.
Ives wriggled with pure delight.
"Freckle, will you tell me where you were? Please? Ill keep it secret I promise!" Ives yipped.
Freckle laughed as he climbed to his feet.
Suddenly he was back again. He was surrounded by the stench of sickness, the moans of the diseased were everywhere. He looked down, seeing their poor faces, twisted in agony all over again. The worst were the hatchlings.
Their tiny bodies unable to fight like adults, so they died much faster. Eggs never hatching, rotting in their nests, the smell of death everywhere. One thousand baths could never wash it away, it is burned to the inside of your nostrils.
A small hatchling the color of sweet berries looked up at him, her body covered in the sickness already. Under her tiny arm was a stuffed animal, dirty and blue, it looked just as sad as she. He knew this baby. He had watched her mother pass only an hour before. He had been told the hatchling was still alive, but had just now seen her.
"Are you scared?" She asked him.
"Of course not, little one." Freckle smiled down at her.
"You arent going to die like me, are you? You are going to be old and strong when you die." She said in her childish squeak of a voice.
So innocent, and yet so morbid. Freckle felt his heart break.
"Here. Take Theodore with you. Hes not scared either. He will protect you from the sick."
Before Freckle could say anything the little one wrapped herself around his feet.
"Im sleepy. Will you tell me a story? My Daddy used to tell me stories before he died. I love fairy tales, can it be about a princess?"
He knew this. The final stage of the sickness. A deep sleep... You never wake up.
Tears flowing like a river, Freckle began.
"Once upon a time there lived a beautiful princess..."
Freckle shook himself out of it, trembling slightly.
But though shaken he turned to the young Tundra and smiled.
"Hey, lets go play a game!" He said excitedly.
"YAY! I love games!" The tiny dragon screamed, then bolted from the cave.
Freckle followed, turning back just once to look at his memories.
A tiny blue bear sat on the bottom shelf, looking just as he did all that time ago.
