Lane

Lane spends his days watching over his sister, Rue. She is nonverbal autistic, and he has taken it upon himself to be her caregiver. Although they are the same age, everyone (including Lane himself) often forgets this and thinks of him as an older brother. He is very protective of her and loves her dearly, and there isn't anything he wouldn't do for her. Because Rue likes to spend her time around fires, Lane spends a lot of time around them by proxy.

To pass the time while Rue is occupied with her fires, he devotes his own time to pottery and silversmithing, activities that allow him to keep a close eye on her but also allow him to contribute to the clan. He especially enjoys the silversmithing because not only does he get to create beautiful pieces of art, but because Rue likes to come over and watch him work when he does that. Sometimes she even goes out with him to dig up the raw silver! He will ask her to help him get the fire to just the right temperature to melt it, and her face lights up in excitement at getting to help her "big" brother. Once the silver is pliable she will cuddle up to him and watch in fascination as his creations take shape. Although he tries to make as many things for the clan to use or sell as possible, he will more often than not end up making simple figures and toys that Rue will then play with. He will tell her stories as he forms his pieces. She also likes watching him work the pottery wheel, but unlike the silverwork she is more interested in the movement of the wheel itself than the outcome of the item he is making. When the clay is ready to be baked he will ask her to get the kiln ready for him, a task that she is, again, only too happy to do.

When he first started silversmithing, he was afraid that the clan would be angry that he was wasting resources by giving most of his work to his sister. After she had gone to bed, even though he was exhausted, he would go out digging to replenish the stores that he depleted. Deathstryke intercepted him one night as he returned laden with material. Before he could even try to explain himself, she told him not to worry about it; if he wanted to, she said, he could go out during the day to dig on his own, and bring Rue with him if she would come. She told him that any material they dug up he could use for his own purposes, as long as the materials that the rest of clan brought back were used to make items that they would all need. He gratefully accepted her offer, and was relieved that Rue easily adapted to going out and digging with him (as long as she got to go right back to the fires as soon as they were home).
