Biography
Saffron: Stolen nearly from the egg by Serthis insurgents and destined to be trained up as a pro-Beastclan warrior. He was given to a disabled ex-general (the one-armed Narokirnir), who quickly became enamored with the little hatchling and decided to flee with him to somewhere they could live in peace. Naro gave the hatchling a Serthis name meaning Saffron, but the hatchling was never able to pronounce it correctly; a little bit of reconnaissance and Naro was able to learn the word's Draconic equal, which was much easier for the hatchling to use. He taught the hatchling to be gentle, but wary, and warned against the dangers other dragons could pose; they were still a threat, as far as he was concerned, even to his adopted son. Saffron has no love for his own kind, and despite all the teachings of his soft-hearted father, he still has a rather bitter way of approaching life. When he can, he quietly sneaks away from the cave where they live and attacks whatever small parties of dragons have wandered too close, feeling a strong resentment toward the creatures his father fears. He sees himself as a vigilante of sorts, and often wears a mask to carry out his plans in anonymity. Even on his own, he is capable of wreaking quite a bit of havoc - though his father doesn't quite condone his actions, as it brings unnecessary interest. He is openly antagonistic toward other dragons, and would honestly consider himself a Serthis if it weren't so obvious he wasn't. Because he cannot physically speak certain Serthis words and phrases, and refuses to speak even a little bit of Draconic (beyond his own name), he has what he considers to be a 'speach impediment.' He must find substitutes for those words he cannot say: for example, "May I please have some of that," would become, "Kindly, I desire a little." He can get quite creative with his phrasing, and probably has a wider vocabulary than the average Serthis because of his "disability." Naro was the one who suggested they travel to meet with Miria and Nen, after Saffron got himself into some real dangerous trouble. Naro had heard rumours of this Pearlcatcher and her Serthis partner who were working to build a better relationship between their species, and thought their guidance was just what Saffron needed in his life. Saffron, on the other hand, thought this was a terrible idea. He had no love for a Serthis who would betray his own kind and willingly work with the enemy, and thought only of how poorly the encounter was bound to go. |
Narokirnir: Thoughtful, soft-spoken, passive. Though he was once a warrior, he is staunchly against violence and tries to avoid fighting if at all possible. He lost his right arm (his spear arm, no less) in a large-scale battle to a dragon of unknown species (perhaps a Guardian or Ridgeback, he cannot remember); the arm was bitten clean off at the shoulder, but healed well with time. Because he could not fight, he was retired to the hatchling nursery - where he found Saffron.
Naro enjoys literature and poetry, and is an excellent scholar with an even, quiet mind. He is fluent in the northern Maren and Harpy languages, and understands Draconic fairly well. Though he knows how dangerous dragons can be, he does harbor the hope that one day the fighting can be quelled; he would like nothing more than the opportunity to make peace, though the antics of his adopted son make that hope a rather distant one.
