Bayanar
Protector
Gwenfore’s mate and protector

“The ocean stirs my heart; She is the Ocean”

It is well known that Ridgebacks are adverse to water, so when Bayanar found himself flying over an ocean…well he became a bit queasy. I wasn’t so bad if he kept himself looking forward, yet even that didn’t keep the long stretch of blue from making its way into the edge of his gaze.

For the fifth time in near twenty minutes, he felt his stomach lurch and his vision swim. There was not a speck of green before or behind him, and turning back would just make him angry anyways. He pressed on, very aware of the looming deep before him.

A terrible amount of time later Bayanar began to feel his eyes droop. Fear wasn’t enough to keep him awake for much longer, and after a moment he began to drop like a stone.

The island had been following him. Or well, following might not be a proper way of putting it. Rather, Soteria knew what was going to happen and appeared as he began to fall. Gwenfore was already in the deep, swimming with her dolphins. Everything would be fine. Probably.

Gwen heard a splash and turned, startled, staring into the swarming mass of bubbles and foam. The fish scattered as the looming form of a dragon much larger than the small nocturne sank into the waves. She near decided to flee herself, but stopped when the dragon made no movement to attack. Rather, he kept sinking.

With a panicked squeak, Gwen shot down after him, thankful for her powerful wings. He was going to drown if she didn’t do something. It was a struggle to push the ridgeback towards the surface, his mass much more than her own.

Gwen called out to the fish, beggin for their help and they came reluctantly, nudging the dragon back towards the shore. When they could go no further Gwen placed his head in a way to make sure he could breathe. He didn’t seem dead, at least not really. She would just have to watch.

The sound of waves woke the sleeping ridgeback, bringing the twisting feeling back to his gut. A second later he sputtered, turning on his side and retching our mouthfuls of water. The sun was blinding on the hot white sand, something that comforted him somewhat. If only the water would just disappear.

Finally, Bayanar looked up. A small nocturne sat before him, tail swishing in the shallow waters. She looked immensely curious, and just a bit worried. He watched as she opened her mouth to speak, yet all he heard was a series of clicks.

The memories of his flight came back to him then, and how he just couldn’t stay awake. He had fallen into the ocean. With that realization, a shudder went through his body. He counted himself lucky that the young dragoness before him decided it worth her while to save his life.

“Thank you” He said, and was greeted with another series of squeaks and clicks.

Bayanar remained on the beach for some time after that, the sick feelings slowly seeping out of him. He found it odd that the nocturne didn’t want to speak, yet he brushed it off and decided it was time to go.

Bidding her a brief farewell, he made his way inland.

The events that followed were long drawn out and just a bit funny. He found the clan quickly (Really Soteria sent him in the right direction, but a sentient islan? Hrmph.) and was welcomed to stay for a while. He asked about the dragon from the beach and found that her tale was a sad one. Opalessi explained the fire, a wet glimmer in the eyes of the pearlcatcher.

Bayanar felt sorry for the nocturne, and it was not a feeling he was used to. He returned to the beach quickly, his heart throbbing in pity.He wasn’t sure what he would do, but something...anything would be better than leaving her out there alone.

When he reached the shore however, he was greeted with the most wonderful sight. Gwenfore, leaping out of the waves, surrounded by dolphins and glistening in the sun. She looked happy, strong, graceful and so many other things that Bayanar couldn’t describe.

The sea complimented her so well that he found himself taking a few steps into the shallows to get a better look.

His heart was still beating in a funny way, but the pity was gone, replaced by awe.

Bayanar hasn’t left her side since.
