Biography
The first thing he remembered was the cold ground beneath his paws. All he knew was that he was alone, his brain fogged with memories of his hatchling days. Bits and pieces of his youngest days, burned into his memory. Panic, hushed whispers of “This child is too chaotic!”, “His magic can’t be controlled!” and “We need to cast him out while we can!” It was all he remembered of what used to be home, a place meant to keep him safe and warm had thrown him into the dangerous frozen tundra. He quickly learned to hunt for himself, learning that if he was slow enough, they wouldn’t see him until it was too late. Learning to fend off attackers in ways he couldn’t quite understand. It didn’t take long for him to run into someone though. He flared his crest, shaking the heavy snow off his sopping feathers. He could feel someone approaching through the thick white. He wasn’t sure if he could fend off another attacker, he was still bloodied and wounded from the last one. His lavender feathers soaked through with crimson blood. When he saw the stranger was another Coatl, equally as bloody red as his feathers had become, he crouched into the snow. The fear pooling in his belly as the icey draggers gathered around his feet. As the stranger turned to approach the boy, he launched the draggers forward. Without so much as a flinch the stranger flicked it’s claws, exploding the daggers where they were, creating bright puffs of ice and snow. He cowered, thinking of turning to run, but before his body could move, the stranger stood above him. “Hello there, little one. What are you doing out here alone?” The stranger spoke, voice low and soft. He tilted his head at the stranger, frills flapping as he listened, “What do you mean? I’ve always been here.” The blood Coatls eyes widened, “Where is your family?” The smaller coatl shook his head, scrunching his snout, “I have never had a family. I’ve been here alone for as long as I can remember.” The older one nodded, “My name is Anubis. Do you have a name?” Again the tiny coatl shook his head, “If I do I don’t remember.” Anubis hummed, “Well, I’m sure I'll think of something to call you. Would you like to come with me?” The tiny coatl looked the blood red coatl over for the first time, eyes momentarily distracted by the onix grasp that seemed to float form Anubis’ back. “Where are you going?” “Everywhere and nowhere. I plan to travel the globe, but I have no real destination in mind.” The purple hatchling jumped up excitedly. Excited at the thought of seeing the world, and even more excited at the thought of no longer being alone. He nodded quickly, moving to stand closer to Anubis, ready to follow his lead. Soon he became known as Fletcher, as he took to the ice and snow as fletchers did their arrows. And as Fletcher grew, Anubis pushed his power. Giving him test after test, teaching him to hone his focus on his abilities. With each passing day Anubis became more impressed. He had his own suspicions as to why the boy’s previous family abandoned him, and for how he survived so long alone. This boy was a deadly weapon, with poor control and no training there is no telling what would have happened. Plenty of dragons told Anubis he was crazy for spending so much time with the boy, “What if he impales you?” they’d say. But if Anubis couldn’t train him, who would? Sometimes Fletcher's icemancy was too much, too quickly for even him. And on those days Anubis barely escaped death by brain freeze. But if he couldn’t turn his magical tragedy into a gift, then who could? As the blade of ice whipped around, shattering against a young pine, ripping it in half, the young coatl turned towards Anubis. A large smile spread across his face as he waved a wing towards him. Fletcher blinked as Anubis walked up to him, the early morning sun silhouetting his frills as they bounced slightly. “Good morning, my boy.” Anubis hummed, settling down next to him. “Good morning, old man.” Fletcher huffed. Over time he had gone from ‘The Boy’ to ‘my boy’, and somewhere along the line Anubis went from ‘Anubis’ to ‘Teacher’ to ‘father’. “I brought you a gift from the market.” “Really now? Is it a new scroll? Why did you get me a gift?” “Still so full of questions.” Anubis mused, pushing the small package towards him. “Did you forget? It’s your hatch day.” Fletcher blinked at Anubis several times before gently opening the package, revealing a set of lavender tricksters cards. “Ah, father?” He said, tilting his head slightly, “What do i do with these?” It was Anubis’ turn to huff out a laugh, “Each card has a special ice rune engraved on it. They should make it easier for you to focus on them, and help you with forming spells.” He said, demonstrating by floating one of the cards around Fletcher. Fletcher carefully began floating the cards around him one by one, taking turns at freezing and unfreezing them at random, even going as far to try and knock off one of Anubis’ grasp, the same grasp that soothed him as hatchling. “Keep practicing, my boy. I’m sure soon you’ll have mastered them.” Anubis said, gently patting him with his wing. “I’ve got to head back to the market for now, but i look forward to seeing how you’ve improved by the time i get back.” Fletcher smiled widely as he watched Anubis walk away, pride growing in his chest. The nightmares of his hatchling days had long left him, replaced with the smiles and laughs of he and Anubis. Fletcher was home.
