Alvrini and Softstep are in memoriam for my family's two farm dogs Micaela and Minnie. They were black and white, short-tailed Australian shepherds.

Micaela was very clever and recognized an amazing number of words in English. She could identify different family members and even cut the different horses in the fields by there names: "go find Bandit!". Micaela's favorite trick was to watch for secret commands. If my father made eye contact with her and wiggled his eyebrows it meant she should bark or howl. He would pretend she was commenting on the conversation.

Minnie was very silly, but also a very quick runner. She would try to guess which trick you wanted by attempting to do them all at once. Minnie was the bane of groundhogs, but gentle to cats and chickens. When she retired she lived with me in the city during college. She knew how to "soft whisper", a quiet grumble sound for indoors. I tried to teach her to "sing" but no matter how much we practiced she could never howl.
