The gentle calls of songbirds fill the canopy. Whispers of wind cradle dewy leaves and ferns. The early night air is thick with moisture that dampens the moss speckled soil of the forest. Ancient trees loom overhead, guardians fashioned from sturdy oak and pine. They line a well worn path that leads deeper and deeper into the forest.
As the path continues, it becomes harder to discern from the forest itself. Ferns encroach on the already thinning trail. Wildflowers burst between its cobbled stones.
Eventually the path dissapears altogether. This is where one must now rely on their instincts. They must open their eyes and see what they would normally ignore. Let their ears to listen. Listen not to the roar of life that envelopes the forest, but to the silence hiding amidst it.
For even silence has a sound. Some of us have just forgotten how to hear it.
Listen to silence, and it will lead to a creature even more ancient than the towering trees. Within the very heart of the forest lies a rock, a basaltic boulder that stands vigil at the opening of a small cave. The boulder is carved into the form of an imperial, engraced with shining black scales and intricate patterns. Moss and ivy have coiled lovingly around the rock. Delicate roses and ropey vines. They almost seem to hold the ancient statue together, to prevent its time weathered body from falling apart.
But what's most stunning about the rock are its eyes. Glimmering rubies. They stare down at all who seek to enter the cave, who seek what lies within it. However, if one steps forward without offering a toll, the rubies will burn a blinding crimson.
The Rock will creak it's stone joints and heave itself off its pedestal. The ground will shake with the force of its massive weight as the mighty beast uncoils. It's intricate markings will spark with verdant fire, and as it bares its onyx talons and claws, you may notice the forest has stopped speaking. No birds chirp. The wind stops breathing. Even the grass and the leaves have stilled.
Not a sound can be heard but the angry crackle of flames. And then a voice, revebrating from the earth itself, rumbles in your chest.
"A toll. A toll must be payed."
