Mercury, Arcmachus, Maggot Maternis, mate of Arsenic the Arkdiplomace, the Hydra of the Simmering Valley, and the Crimson Rain Queen, serves as the Arch Head of all three Deathsmith Guilds of the Nightwalker Clan.

She is among the eldest of the Walkers, though her age doesn't seem to hinder her hunger for dominance, nor her skill with demonstrating it. In fact, before the establishment of the Deathsmith Guilds, she ruled as the Head of the Nightraiders, when the Walkers did not organize themselves into castes of Warriors and Hunters and Battlesmiths and Bladeyres, but knew only those who could kill well and those who could not.

Her name is one of violence and terror, where even Walker healers raise concerns of psychopathy, wondering if the merciless spirit of Mercury ought to be destroyed before it turns feral.

Yet it is Arsenic, the Arch Diplomace, poetically enough, that has not only won her loyalty, but also, to many dragons' surprise, won her heart. While other Nightwalkers bother only to select mates when the urge is there, customarily exchanging throughout the season, Mercury and Arsenic have only ever chosen and bore broods with each other, and can be found spending their free time preening and grooming one another, and (in the words of their students) exchanging gross amounts of "I love you"s.
