“what's pure was taken”

.. His vision was a mass of blurred colors. Pain flared. He let out a cry, but couldn’t regain his breath afterwards. He heaved, but nothing resulted in his efforts. After a terrifying ten seconds of struggle, he took a breath. It felt as if a dagger was being slid between his ribs. He hiccupped, and tried to bring his arms to his heart. There was something blocking his way, and the way he hit it was in the most wet and unpleasant manner.

He squeezed his eyes shut.

A lifeless husk bled openly into the ground beneath him. A lingering smell of roses taunted him as his fingers brushed the lace of her dress. He felt sick to his stomach. Daring to look at what he had crushed, a more gruesome sight than he could have ever fathomed met his eyes. Her wings were pockmarked with bullet holes, and bent at an uncomfortable angle. A trail of her precious ichor streamed from the corner of her mouth down to her chest, the wedding dress tainted a foul pink.

He could do no more than shudder and wrap his arms around her broken body. THere he lay, as thoughts incessantly struck him, one by one, like pebbles thrown at goliath, but were cast away. ”Did you just fall from Heaven?” Why yes, I did, thought Morgenstern, finally responding, heartbroken, to one of the remarks plaguing him. I did, and it killed my bride. She was so soft, so warm. Burying his face into her neck, it was so easy to imagine she still had a pulse; it seemed only seconds ago she held his hands and gazed into his eyes. But it was so far away. Now had a lurching, speeding, slipping dreamlike quality akin to only his worst of nightmares.

A frightened sob wracked his body, and then he was still for what felt like hours but in reality was only a few minutes. He reached, fingering her dress, tracing his claw along the hem and reaching the lonely place where a rose perched defiantly. He grasped it, and all at once plucked it from her. Rolling onto his side, he studied the flower. Occasion-only, enchanted to never wilt or break. So why wasn’t she? The petals were smooth and creamy, and looked like they would melt in your mouth if you were to place the gift on your tongue.

“Hey!” he jumped, looking wildly around him for the angry, accusing voice. A group of tribal dragons had approached him while he was entranced by the flower. The group wasn’t too large nor was it too small, but rather somewhere in the middle. Their chief appeared to be in lead: he donned a headdress made of a lion’s pelt and a hippo’s teeth. The frightening monstrosity that resulted only added to the chief’s intimidation potential. When he spoke, Morgenstern naturally flinched away.

“What are you doing on our land?” he barked. “Now we have to get rid of you and that damn corpse! Couldn’t you have found a better place for a murder? And why are you draped over her body? What perverted behavior! She’s dead, just leave her alone!”

“What a freak…” echoed those around him.

“I didn’t kill her,” he stated, wide eyed.

“It’s obvious you did, now get her useless sack of skin and blood off our land, and bring yourself along for the ride! You’re not welcome here.” A crow cawed, and fluttered away over the scene. He and the group shifted simultaneously, in a staredown.

“I didn’t kill her. This is the spot where she fell, and I’m not moving her from it.”

“We’re gonna kill you, too, if you don’t get away right now,” he growled.

“I will not move her; I will not leave.”

The roared, charging towards him with sharp weapons previously unnoticed extended. A sudden rush of adrenaline and rage that had never before laced his blood erupted, and he snarled, rising several feet into the air with her body in tow. They stopped, confused and tripping over one another. They started to back away from the creature that had just been revealed.

He hovered effortlessly, his wings stationary at his sides and his face always with the same sorrowful, lonely expression. Roses floated around him, and he let their petals morph into spinning, sharpened blades.

“Leave me alone,” he whispered, peppering the tribe with noxious petals. “To where she goes,” his voice rose into song as blood blossomed beautifully on the ground below. None of their screams met his ears; they were long ago devoured by the wind that hungered, swirling around him. “It’s where I go, and I’ll go, alone!” he screamed.

“It’s the devil!” croaked the chief, blood bubbling from his throat.

His eyes glowed. “I’m the angel,” he murmured.
