The first time she opened her eyes, it was to whispers of a taint. Her nest-brother vanished early; she was left alone and every dragon in the lair gave her a wide berth. She heard them when they thought she wasn’t listening; they said she wasn’t a proper ice dragon and that her black body was a sign that she was impure. She knew better though; the older dragons of the clan were afraid. They had seen the mark of the Icewarden on her eggshell. No one knew what it meant and the uncertainty unnerved them. As she grew, she did so in virtual isolation; her only companion besides the ice goblin gifted at her birth was her slowly growing pearl. Layer by layer, month by month, she wrapped her soul in a sheath of loneliness and unrealized potential. One chill winter night, that came to a close. Outside the shelter of the clan’s den, she sat in the moonlight.Turning her pearl around and around in her claws, something in the core caught the moonlight. She looked more closely and with a start noticed a very familiar shape. At the very heart of her pearl was a chunk of eggshell marked with the symbol of the Icewarden. As she turned her pearl into the moonlight to see the fragment better, the symbol began to glow blue. A voice began to echo in her ears. It wasn’t the suspicious whispers of her clanmates. This voice was older, deeper, and more powerful. It hinted at the depth of the heart of a glacier and the howling of the wind across the empty tundra. Hello, child. I have long been waiting for you to come to me. The dragoness nearly dropped her pearl in shock. Was that really his voice? She studied her pearl and found her eyes drawn to the symbol again. Under her gaze, the symbol changed and in an instant became the face of the Icewarden himself. He appeared self-satisfied to have made contact with her at last. You are ready, young one. It is time for you to bear the burden you were born to carry. I offer you this choice: stay here in your birth clan and continue as you are or depart this place and find a new place and a new audience for the power and majesty of Ice. The choice is yours, youngling. She sat stunned for a moment before shaking herself. “Wait, O venerable one. I … I would like to leave this place, but I am not yet Named. How can one who is unnamed bear your message properly?” The Icewarden listened for a moment before answering. Your concerns are valid, daughter of ice. As you have chosen to bear my message, I shall give you a gift. You are my herald, my hope.I give you a Name that shows this. Bear my burden well, Nadiya. The newly-Named Nadiya straightened her shoulders as the Icewarden vanished from her pearl and the symbol went inert. Holding the soul-stone close to her chest, she stood and walked away from her birth clan without looking back. The midnight sun shone on her wings and glistened on her body as she left the past behind her and flew into a future marked by her deity. | xxxx |
