As I walk through the forest, I hear music. Some call me Arcane; others call me a dreamer. Some think I've lost but all of my wits. But Sornieth holds music for every ear, if only they will sit down and hear it out. And so, I wander down the thick lanes of trees and into where the clearings cross confusingly, then end. I follow the sounds of flutes and the singing souls of elder dragons exalted to the Lightweaver long before. Slowly, allotments of small dens and humble homes turn to the harrowing but somehow homey Onyx Peaks. After, nothing. After, smoke. The music of The Before grows louder as the score hits its climax, high tones ringing in my ears. I only feel a light scrape as my wings hit the ground. All of me hits the ground. I am unaware. I fall back into the past. If I listen to music for too long, this always happens. The spirits live in the scores. I see a young Peregrine, little more than a hatchling. Her clan stands ruined and she is alone... Fires larger than the Flamecaller's rage outside what is now known as the Moonstone Climb. Ash breaks my vision and the landscape is covered in dull gray that I wish was snow. Then, Sun emerges from the smoke. Her wings aglow, she takes Peregrine in her small talons. Weak from her size, the little fae crashes back into the soot with Peregrine in tow. Flames lick at her wingtips and the fans atop her head. Now I know where the burns came from... I wake, surrounded once again by the deep black curves and plateaus of the Peaks. The trees are gone; so is the smoke. The ashen color and soulless feeling remains. Sun did not take Peregrine's homeland. It was already gone. All she did was rescue Peregrine from death, and I think that's really what made the guardian afraid. |
