Biography

Seca
Clan Leader's Adviser
Chaotic Good

PkKAmaj.png
Seca is Silas's mother, who ended up in her son's clan due to a bizarre twist of fate. She hides her identity due to various past events, and even her own son is unaware of their familial ties. Acting as his advisor, she protectively watches over him as he continues to grow into his role as clan leader.

A seer of sorts, some of her advice draws its origins from visions of the future. However, most of it is the product of Seca's wisdom gained through years of experience. (And a bit of it is just nonsense she made up because it was funny.)

Her refusal to reveal anything about her past means she doesn't have many friends, nor do many dragons particularly trust her. But as she seems reasonably nice, even if she does keep to herself, that lack of trust hasn't noticeably passed on to Silas' leadership. Secrecy does mean that nobody has any clue what to get Seca for her birthday, but as nobody knows when her birthday is that's a moot point. (She'd really appreciate some small knickknacks to decorate her lair with, thanks for asking.)

Most dragons don't even realize that she's not of the arcane element, as she always wears sunglasses. The most common rumour is that something happened to them as the result of one experiment or another. Common suggestions are that they've been replaced with miniature stars, or that they'll shoot death rays if the glasses are removed. Seca has no intention of taking her glasses off, only partially because revealing that the secret is just that her eyes are blue would really be a letdown.

Even though she often acts like a frail, old dragon, Seca is neither frail, nor particularly old. She just doesn't want others to know what she's capable of, possibly due to a slight bit of paranoia. Or maybe she just likes giving other dragons another reason to be considerate of her. Probably both. When not acting as advisor, she keeps herself to a strict fitness regime, which has given her strength that isn't actually that impressive because she's still a fae.

Seca isn't terrible at magic either, though she wouldn't call herself particularly skilled. Her usual tactic is to quickly throw a blast of water at any given threat's face and then make herself scarce while it's stunned. If she's feeling particularly vindictive, she'll give it a quick punch to the side of the head on the way out. Not that a fae's punches hurt much, but getting a solid hit in makes her feel better about herself.

And yet for all the hard work she does, Seca rarely seems happy. It's the curse of the seer, for while Seca might be able to see a possible future, she's never been able to change it. And ever since a past tragedy, she's become quite the fatalist, believing that there's nothing that can be done to fix some things. If one of her visions were to spell doom for another dragon, she wouldn't even tell them. It's better to let them live out what's left of their life in blissful ignorance.

Somehow plays heavy metal on her pipeflute.

Years ago, Seca was the leader of a small clan in the Shifting Expanse. A native of the Sea of a Thousand Currents, she had previously been plagued with dire visions of the future. One in which the shade rose up from underground, as an incarnation of nothingness consuming everything in its path and eventually laying waste to the whole of Sornieth.

In a bid to find a way to change the foreseen future, Seca moved to the territory of Lightning, and set up a camp around a rock formation she recognized from her visions. Around the rock formation were many large chunks of unidentifiable scrap metal, which Seca used to build her shelter.

The first weeks passed in solitude, and Seca was never able to tell if the shadowy shapes she caught glimpses of were caused by the shade, or from a burning desire for company. She spent those weeks searching the nearby area for these shadows, but found nothing of interest except the ancient skeleton of an imperial dragon in an otherwise empty cave. Close to the skeleton were a couple of pieces of blue jewellery, but those appeared to have no connection to her visions.

Eventually, other travellers with nowhere else to go found her camp, and some decided to settle alongside her. Eventually, a clan grew where there was once nothing but rocks and sand, and Seca found herself leading a clan of misfits and wanderers. All in all, Seca found the leadership position suited her, and she began to enjoy her life in the Shifting Expanse. She even met her mate, Trec, there, and the two had a single hatchling together. The visions of shade-related doom lessened, and all was happy, for a short time.

Then the storm came.

Lightning storms weren't uncommon in the area - in fact, every structure had a lightning rod to protect the occupants from strikes. It was the windstorm that was unusual. Buildings were torn form the ground, and the clan members were forced to shelter in the ruins of what survived the storm. But the storm eventually subsided, and Seca's clan surveyed the destruction, confident that with some hard work they'd be able to rebuild.

But it was only hours after the storm ended that things got worse. From the east, a group of dragons arrived, looking to take advantage of the chaos caused by the storm. Known as the Ravagers, marauders and bandits all of them, they looted the destroyed clan, stealing everything in sight and killing anyone they saw. The clan were powerless to resist, exhausted from a day of clearing rubble, and lacking fighters in the first place. Only Seca and her hatchling survived, hidden in the debris of what used to be her home.

With Trec dead, and her clan in ruins, Seca lost any confidence that she was capable of leading, or that she was even able to take care of her son. She left her hatchling, only a year or two old, in the care of some Lightning natives, who said they'd take good care of him, and that they saw a bright future as a Tempest Spire engineer in store for him. As a final memento, she left her son a choker, its deep blue a memory of her old home in the Sea, and then left the Expanse, never to look back.

Seca then spent years wandering the face of Sornieth, never staying in one place too long, and never expecting to. But fate had more plans for her than just aimless wandering, and she eventually found herself in a clan in the Starfall Isles, almost as far away as it was possible to get from the ruins of her old clan. There she was welcomed by a young fae, a fae who had recently (unofficially) taken up the mantle of clan leadership, a fae who was wearing the same choker she had left her son all those years ago...

And there she has stayed.

Slowly, the blurry shapes in front of Seca's eyes came into focus. A couple of shelves, a longneck skull, a jar of suspiciously glowing liquid... this was Bozatrox's office, all right. Kind of them not to leave her laying on the stone outside.

She tried to scrabble upright, but the bloodrush to her head sent her right back to the stone floor in a tangle of wings and claws. They hadn't bothered to put her on the bed, whoever they were. Bozatrox would've, but she was probably busy tending to the skydan-

The skydancer. Fear welled up within Seca, even her headache frightened enough to jump ship. Kokoro had brought her in. The others knew what was wrong. But they couldn't really see it. They couldn't really sense it.

But Seca could. Malice radiated off the poor dragon, a carpet of shade flowed around their body. She had no idea what that dragon could have done to deserve such a fate, but more shade likely flowed than blood in the skydancer's veins.

But that wasn't the true problem.

The problem was that it was familiar.

No.

Faintly had she felt it before, that dark force. And even as she held her head in her claws to try to stop it, her prodigious memory began to zero in on where she'd encountered it before.

It can't...

It lurked behind another dragon. Clueless, that dragon wielded magic without noticing the tendrils that leeched off their power. Hungry and weak, the shade lusted for magic to sustain itself, but had never stolen enough that Seca was able to notice.

Nononononononononono...

But, she realized, it was starting to gain strength. It was starting to feed itself back, looking to claim a new host. It'd be a long process, but without destroying the source, there'd be nothing anyone could do to stop it from consuming him.

I failed him...

It's all my fault.

The shade had claimed her son.
