He's barely a month old, and already he has witnessed more death than most dragons do in their entire lifetime. He's the size of a puppy, abnormally small compared to his siblings, so he fits perfectly in the safe with his family's treasure. He pushes the door back and is greeted with the searing heat of his family's hovel burning. He gives a yelp and scrambles backwards. He watches the fire rage on. He's calling for his mama, wishing she could give him a great big hug with her voluminous Fae wings, but she's not here. He doesn't know it, but his mother is lying upstairs, her body burned, her life snuffed out, her wings never to give another hug. He watches as the fire burns closer and closer, and he is so afraid, but he's not supposed to fear fire as a Fire Flight dragon. So he closes the door and buries his fears.
He's known her barely a month, and he knows he would die for her. She doesn't care about his past, how he refuses to talk about it. She herself refuses to talk about how she acquired the scars across her beautiful face. It is something they agree upon, something they hold sacred. Their pasts are their own.
