Hazel loves her clan, her family. The group of dragons she calls her own that nest amongst the whistling bamboo. Her gentle mate and loyal friends. She loves the sounds of the hatchlings cavorting in the tall grass, their high calls and chattering conversations drifting on the wind. She smiles when they come to her, offering her flower blossoms they have collected or pretty feathers. She weaves them into garlands, wears them as jewelry.

She is the mother to all hatchlings, the caretaker. It is her hand that presses against a feverish hatchling in the night, or is found patiently feeding a dragon medicine when they fall ill. She is a listening ear or a shoulder to lean on. And when the beasts come she is not afraid to defend her home with tooth and claw.

In the darkness of the night, though, her mate holds her as phantoms invade her rest. The darkness of the cavern envelops her again as she watches her family suffer. The black, oozing ichor that leaks from her mate's eyes, stealing the light from their violet depths, listening in helpless terror as her hatchlings emerge from weak-shelled eggs, only to collapse under the weight of their

own skin. The stench of disease invades her nostrils, the smell of decay and death. All around are the bodies of her fallen friends, their skin marked with the illness that claimed their lives. She is alone in the darkness.

It was a shadow that brought her to the light. A dark Guardian who pulled her from the stinking wreckage of her clan and family, to the rippling grasses and clean wind that could blow the stench of illness away. Shadow who kept her company in the nights that followed, alone on the wide grassy plains. Shadow who made sure she was fed and helped her heal, mind and body. Shadow who welcomed Augustus, made him feel at home and watched in silent support as Hazel accepted Augustus as her new mate.

Her darkness still haunts her, but the support of her new clan fills her spirit. In return, she is the rock, stalwart and dependable. She is the beating heart of her clan, and they will never falter again.
