The shadows were dark over the putrid horizons of the Scarred Wasteland when a yellow-eyed dragon came scampering over the fleshy landscape. His name was Xerath, and he was one of the guardians of one of the great warlords known infamously throughout the land, Cassius. An empty sack was slung over his shoulder, swaying gently back and forth as he took flight, wide wings covering the sky.

At the same time, a small, skinny Ridgeback dragon was prowling the outskirts of her birth lair. Her scales were cold, and her tiny body shivered. Nevertheless, her crimson eyes were sharp and fierce. She sat solidly at the entrance of her lair, refusing to enter.

Her stubbornness could be understood if one understood the family she came from. The family that looked down upon her; hated her; scorned her for being different. It was true that she was different, but what was wrong with being different? What was wrong in not finding joy in combat? In ripping one's claws across bared throats?

The joy, the Ridgeback thought, was in the killing itself, and there were too many ways to kill to only find pleasure in one. She preferred other ways of killing. Other ways...the ways that were different. Scarier. Colder. Darker.

As she sat absently at her post, staring at the crimson haze of the sky, she did not hear the soft beats of flapping wings, nor hear the gentle thud of an alighting dragon. She did not see the lamplike yellow eyes in the dark. All she saw was the sky, the stars, and ---

Darkness.

What happened next was too fast for the hatchling to process. One moment she was standing on the loamy ground, and the next her feet were thrashing wildly about against folded canvas. She did not scream. She knew the law of prey and predator well enough for that. Instead, heart thumping with panic, she crawled her way up the side of the sack, nearly tearing out her claws. Fighting to regain balance, the hatchling reached the top and pried open the heavily sealed cover.

The first thing she felt was the cool night air, and the next thing that caught her attention was the dragon carrying her on his back. He smelled and felt different from her ravaging clanmates. He had the feel of a warrior. There was blood on his feathers, yet no scars crossed them. Immediately the hatchling recognized him for what he was, and she knew not to risk her life for escape. She glanced across the skyline, gaze falling upon the rapidly vanishing dot that was her birth lair.

As the wind picked up, she crept back into the bottom of the sack and curled up, waiting for the trip to end. During the entirety of the time it took for Xerath to take her back to Legion, she did not weep.

And that was the beginning of Mother's legacy.

It is said that the warlord Cassius had an eye for dragons -- the unordinary and the strong. Every dragon that joined Legion was different from the norm, whether it be in fierceness, darkness, or merciless. This held true for Mother in all shades but one: she did not stand to be ruled over.

Ambition. Thirst. Not many dragons can explain Mother's motivation to take over all that lived within the Scarred Wasteland, but many dragons agreed that she might be the very first to have the ability and prowess to do so. For indeed, it did not take her long to con Cassius into making her his "Queen" and rise up the ranks of Legion. One can say that Cassius was blind to her antics, and they would be wrong -- for in the warlord's eyes, she was a ticket to greatness that he knew he could master in time.

In fact, Mother was anything but that. She was the trickster and the manipulator, the mastermind behind curtains. The moment she gained the title of Queen, her plans of dominance went into place. She extended her reach as far as Cassius', and took what he couldn't for herself. Her power was infectious, and where she went, disease and discord would follow. As the Queen of Legion, Mother led the clan into many battles over other groups of dragons in the surrounding area. She made very sure to lay to waste the horrendous birth lair that'd given her so many woes. She fought and fell foes, and in her wake there were none that could stand against her.

It looked as if Mother would take over the entire Flight itself, but in one battle, the ambitious Ridgeback finally found her match. It was a battle against a clan called Auroral Dissonance, and she could not penetrate their defences. She tried to touch and corrupt them -- to no avail. The dragons of Auroral Dissonance were incorruptible. They lived in an aura of purity that blinded her when she looked at them. They had no visible weaknesses, and Mother was unable to advance any further. Worse, the clan began moving against her and Legion, and she was forced to retreat. She was furious, but she was patient. She told herself that one day, Auroral Dissonance would show its weakness, and that was when she would strike.

And so she lies in wait.

Mother is different from Cassius in the sense that she knows more about other dragons than just their abilities, which makes her a more capable and efficient leader. She knew the fears and desires of the dragons against them, and thus finds it a simple task to twist them to her will. Thus she is called the shadow clan leader -- the one who is truly running things. Most of the clan's loyalty already belongs to her, the first of them being Nolofinwe, Arafinwe, Lalwende, Ainairos. Her calling is irresistible to all those with Plague heritage except perhaps Cadfael, who remains utterly devoted to Namid and Kohana. But that's fine with Mother. She has other ways to make him cooperate.

Mother's power reaches far beyond her ability to manipulate other dragons. She also has the ability to spread contagion everywhere, much to the horror of those in the Nature Flight. It is said that even the Gladekeeper trembles at her approach, and the day that Mother sets foot in Nature land is the day that the Nature Flight vanishes off the map. Along with corruption of the environment, Mother bathes in an aura of disease that infects everyone about her, save some special exceptions. This makes her a deadly combatant, for it should be obvious who's the winner if your opponent is trying to fight with withering limbs.

Perhaps Mother's greatest attribute is that of patience. She knows to wait, and she never takes a step without considering all the consequences first. Mother can wait five eons for what she wants, and longer if she has to.

Cassius is not completely oblivious to Mother apparent power, but would make an easy target for her, especially with her power of infection and his heritage of Nature. But killing Cassius right now wouldn't do, now would it? After all, Cassius still retains authority over Legion, not to mention he's handy in combat. As long as he remains her ticket to world dominance, Mother's willing to let this inferior self-suffused Skydancer live.
