❧ ADAMANTINE
Passionate | Driven | Intense | Guarded Adamantine's birth was eagerly awaited among many in her immediate family. A Nocturne hatched from a nest of Skydancers was a somewhat rare occurrence, after all, and while such things had been known to happen in the past, Adamantine's Nocturne siblings were few and far between. Her hatching was greeted with a flurry of excitement, and the doting upbringing she received meant that Adamantine never doubted her place, even in a clan with so many warriors. When her siblings left the nest - Gladion for apprenticeship in another Lightning clan and Laelia for a far more independent destiny - Adamantine never questioned her own decision to stay behind. She was loved and valued in the ancestral home of the Night Warriors, and the strength of her family was all she needed to be happy. She completed her training and took a mate with many admirable qualities, although his heart was somewhat harder than Adamantine found desirable. From that point on, she became a lair guard and began raising the next generation of Night Warriors. She even trained them herself, guiding them through their early combat instruction and preparing them for life among the younger clans of Sornieth. But as time passed, something happened - or rather, something did not happen. Very few of Adamantine's children went on to join the next generation of warriors. Several of her sons achieved the rank of a fully-fledged Night Warrior, along with one of her daughters, but few of them went on to prosperity. Adamantine could not understand it. She had given them the best possible start, but even with the strength of the family behind them, her offspring hadn't succeeded. At the same time, her mother had two half-siblings in quick succession - Carina, whose birth as a Coatl had caused an even bigger uproar than Adamantine's own hatching, and Damascus, elegant and graceful and part of two warrior families instead of one. It was the fall of her firstborn Night Warrior, Anthea, that finally broke Adamantine's heart. Sent to a cruel first clan, liberated briefly and returned, only to vanish from that place into the depths of obscurity, what happened to Anthea was so alien to Adamantine's understanding that she simply could not accept it. She adopted Anthea's last hatchlings, Slyfoot and Bregedyr, and raised them as best she could, finding a place for Bregedyr among the Suncircle's closest allies, Auroral Dissonance, when the other dragons' mockery of his light-colored wings proved more than he could stand. To Slyfoot, she is a steadfast role model and the only parent he has ever known - but to the rest of her family, Adamantine has grown bitter and cold. If they had been blind to the suffering of her and hers, so too would she turn their backs on them. Only her mother and her half-siblings are spared from judgment - the rest of her family is culpable, even complicit, in what has happened to her immediate family. Deep down, Adamantine knows that she is being unfair, but she can't bring herself to confront the true source of her rage. After all, someone must be to blame - and if she can't blame the rest of her family, her only alternative is for her to blame herself. |
