When Erika and her twin brother Theodore were born, they fell out of the same egg, clinging to each other, one life split between two bodies. One of them would have to sacrifice themself for the other; only one of them could survive. Erika started to cry, frail but alive, and turned towards her mother as her brother stilled and withered into ash in her arms.

Erika's earliest memories were of travel and a sense of emptiness beside her. She never knew where the sense of emptiness came from and soon forgot about it. Erika was a frail child and often tired from even simple tasks. Her pearl always had a pink tint to it from the sludge she added to her pearl, which caused her parents to become upset, though she could never figure out why. Her sister Frederica (whom she called Freddy) had the odd habit of vomiting sludge on other dragons, with one such incidence being on Erika herself, rather than forming a pearl, so Erika decided early on to keep and add to her pearl for the both of them, much like when she saved extras of things for Freddy. Erika and her sister spent most of their time studying with their parents and the other adults.

Eventually, her small clan settled and built a home beside a small creek. On the day they finished building their home, which she got to help name, her sister Freddy brought home a new friend, a Serthis named The Baron whom she had helped the day before. Erika was curious but shy about her sister's new friend. Some of the adults started hissing before their leader Wisteria put an end to it and welcomed him to their home. The rest of the night went peacefully and Erika fell asleep beside her sister, only to awaken sometime into the night from Freddy leaving and heading outside. Gathering herself, she followed her sister outside into the forest.

Freddy was less than pleased to discover her sister had followed her into the forest, but acquiesced in the face of Erika's concern. The two ventured further into the forest to return Freddy's frog Bud back where she'd found him. However, Bud refused to leave his cage and moments after the unsettling silence that descended, an enraged Owl attacked. Erika hit the ground as Freddy shoved her out of the way and put herself between Erika and the Owl, earning a deep cut into her shoulder as she yelled at Erika to run. However, the Owl had trapped them and began to push them further away from home. The sisters were forced back to the edge of a steep incline and Erika grabbed onto Freddy to stop herself from tipping over. Despite Freddy's efforts to balance them and stop them from going over, their combined weight proved to be too much. As something descended upon the Owl, causing it to scream in pain and fly away, the sisters went over the edge, screams of fear torn from their throats as they were separated during the fall. Erika's last thought before she hit the ground was for Freddy's safety.

When Erika came to, it was to Freddy shaking her and begging her to wake up...except she was looking at the scene a couple feet away, her pearl lying beside her body. Panicking, she reached for her body, only to find her claws passed right through both her own body and Freddy's. Her attempts at getting her sister's attention bore no fruit. Frustrated and dismayed, she could do nothing but watch as her sister kept trying to wake her before coming to the horrible realization that she was dead.

She felt a gentle tugging sensation, pulling her away. The world froze and faded around her and she stood before the Shadowbinder herself in front of the pool in the Forum of the Obscured Crescent. Erika wanted to go back home, to her sister and her parents, and told the Shadowbinder as much. However, the deity had other plans. With the growth of the clans of Sornieth, the deities could no longer answer every call made to them. She would serve as a guardian spirit, just like her brother, to a clan of Sornieth, if she was willing. Erika contemplated the deity's proposal. She remembered how frail she was in life, how others were always caring for her needs before their own; remembered Freddy putting herself in front of her to try and protect her. Erika agreed, wanting to help others after her death in a way she never would have been able to in life.

The Shadowbinder bathed Erika in some of the pool's water, causing her pearl to glow and granting her the gift of foresight and the ability to tell truth from falsehood. Erika was adorned in lace and a silk scarf. The Shadowbinder told her that the scarf would match the dragon she would be assisting and that he would have a claw to match her's as well. The deity sent her to the edges of the clan, where a Skydancer dressed in silk and a matching claw waited for her, a small crowd standing behind him. Climbing to her feet, Erika moved towards the Skydancer, who introduced himself as Lizekiel before introducing everyone behind him, and began her new role as the clan's guardian spirit and Lizekiel's spectral guide.

‘mourning songs, low and haunting, sung in ritual and in grief. petals of poppy flowers, slightly bruised, laid next to each other gently. the scent of amaranth flowers. the lingering feeling sitting somewhere just underneath and to the left of your lungs like there’s something important you’re forgetting, something you can’t quite put your finger on.’
