Darren was hatched into the Lightning Flight to two Arcane Fae dragons, who taught him magic. When he left his thunder, he went to the Starfall Isles to study magic.

About two years later, at about age 16, he went with a Snapper named Curiosity to save her friend Ness, who had been cursed to turn into ice. He couldn't reverse the curse (because it had been set by the Icewarden), but he could stop her from freezing completely. He enchanted Curiosity's ornate darksteel bracelet to stop Ness from freezing as long as she was wearing it. Unfortunately, he couldn't do this before Ness' eyes were frozen over, blinding her.

After this, Ness and Curiosity both owed Darren a lifedebt, so Darren stayed with them to help take care of Ness. The three dragons moved to the Zephyr Steppe, and soon after, Curiosity brought home a newly hatched dragonet. All three dragons immediately fell in love with Pomona, named so by Ness (ever the bookworm), and they all decided to raise them as their own. During this time, Darren was looking around for a new flight without any of his family noticing.

He finally found out about the Rookery when he met his friend Thalia from his time in the Starfall Isles. He persuaded Ness and Curiosity to take Pomona to Fishspine Reef so they could join, and join they did.
