Whyrthala

Scholarly | Wise | Distant | Organised | Light Representative

Whyrthala’s obsession with books and knowledge began when she was just a hatchling. Her own mother and father were scholars of sorts. She definitely inherited a love of learning from them.
She learned to read at an unusually early age, and quickly went from simple children’s books to larger, more complex texts. Out of habit, she keeps every book she has ever read. Because of this, her living space is more of a library than a house. She has to add new shelves every few years just to keep up. Of course, having a large collection doesn’t mean that she tolerates clutter. Every book has its place. Whyrthala has a special system to keep her texts organized by content, title, and author. It might seem a little complicated to others, but to Whyr it makes perfect sense.

She might prefer books to people, but Whyrthala has never had any trouble getting along with her clan. She gets along especially well with Cabal, but is happy to spend time discussing scholarly texts or theory with anyone who’s willing. Lucky for her, there’s no shortage of intelligent discussion with all sorts of scholars around.

Whyrthala started out as the representative in the Clan of Elders, but when a more suitable candidate arrived, she stepped back -and stepped forwards again when the clan realized the Council needed a chairman. They needed someone to assign tasks and keep discussions on track, and Whyrthala was more than qualified to do this.

Like all the other members of the Council of Elders, Whyrthala has lived a long life and accumulated much wisdom over the years. She loves having a position on the council. It lets her discuss philosophy and the impact of events with other dragons who have views different from her own.
Although she’s usually friendly enough, Whyrthala can be cold and distant to some people. This often happens when she’s interacting with people she perceives to be unintelligent. She might not be willing to admit it, but she tends to look down on people who prefer more physical pursuits like fighting to studying and learning. She knows that she can be unfair toward others when she first meets them, so she tries to reserve judgment until they get to know one another.

This has been made all the more difficult since Whyrthala became reacquainted with her son, Bantu. She lost contact with the young Skydancer when he was still a child. Now that he’s grown, they’re trying to forge a new relationship. It hasn’t been easy. The two have similar interests that help bridge the gap, but there’s still a lot to figure out.
Like his mother, Bantu has a deep love of literature and knowledge. But he also craves more than that. He isn’t content with learning about the world through text. He wants to explore it and see things for himself.

They might not always see eye-to-eye, but Whyrthala is incredibly proud of her son. She can come off as a little overbearing sometimes, but only because she’s still trying to reconcile this wise, determined creature with the image of the young, fragile hatchling she has in her head. She’ll come to terms with her son’s independence someday. Until then, she’ll continue to walk on eggshells around him.

Trivia
  • Can't stand Blythe's disorganised library. How can anyone live like that?
  • Finds a quiet joy in painting her scales, though she wouldn't easily admit it.
