Biography

Arcania
"Wish I could be a star shining above your tower, my dear"

Arcania was sitting submerged in her thoughts, the marble floor of her tower plesantly cooling her scales. From here she had a view of the sleeping valley below. The sky was just a few shades darker than the colour of her body, illuminated to midnight blue by the full moon. The clouds were travelling lazily across the night sky like sleepers passing through their dreams.

But there was no sleeping or dreaming for Arcania. She had to decide what she should do next. Leave? Stay? She shook her head. Either of those seemed bad for multiple reasons.

Ding-a-ling-ding-ding. The sound of bells had broken her chain of thoughts. Below her was the chamber that held a huge collection of little bells, suspended from their strings like fireflies of shining glass, silver and brass. Somebody was there now, stirring them to music. Arcania lashed her tail with irritation. Everybody in the clan knew that making the bells ring was the easiest way to annoy her. Who could be so brazen, and in the middle of the night nonetheless?

Arcania folded her wings and took the stairs down, prepared to give a good tongue-lashing to anyone that decided to disturb her now.

There was a dragon sitting in the middle of the chamber, still fanning his wings that roused the bells to play and his golden ribbons and veil to undulate with the current. Arcania stopped suddenly, taken aback with the sight of him.

‘Cousaturum…’ she said. Why it had to be him, and at this very moment when she tried to make a decision? His appearance did not help the matters, raising feelings deep within her chest.

Cousaturum folded his wings and adjusted his position, placing his pearl in the folds of his coiled tail. He looked at her with his deep, purple gaze.

‘You have been avoiding me’ he said- a statement, not a question.

Arcania felt her irritation ebbing away. She folded her wings and sat down too.

‘Yes’ she said and looked at Cousaturum at this gold face she knew so well. In fact, it was the first face she saw when she emerged from her egg- a picture of patience and acceptance, the yellow Pearlcatcher that greeted her into the world. For a short time, she even believed that he was her father. But the truh was much more interesting.

When she was young and still small enough to do so, she would climb onto Cousaturum’s back demanding that he would tell her the story.

‘But you have heard that story a thousand times already, young one’ he’d protest mildly.

‘Tell it again!’ she insisted until he would relent.

‘One day I went to help the foragers in their daily chores. I went into the forest and looked around. I have found a swatch of Manaweed. Then I have found wild apples growing from a large tree. Then I bent under a fallen trunk and I found Blackberries growing in some tangled bushes.’

‘Last time you told the story you’ve said that you found Lucky Stars, Gradishes and Cliffside Milkweeds in cracked stones!’ chimed in Arcania.

‘Did I?’ said Cousaturum, feigning surprise and smiling at her widely. ‘Anyway, I took all the plants I could carry and went back to meet with the rest of the foragers. But there and then I noticed something plum-coloured and round. I thought it was a stone, all overgrown with purple moss. But I came closer and realized that was no stone.’
‘And there it was…’ he would pause for the effect. ’…A most perfect Arcane egg.’

‘It was me!’ Arcania would say bouncing up and down on Cousaturum’s shoulders.

‘Yes, it was you little one. And I took it and cared for it myself, for I took it as a sign that the Arcanist himself approves of our clan living on this floating island. That is where your name came from.’

‘What I am going to be when I grow up, Cousaturum?’she would ask.

Then he would take her off his back and hold her in front of him. He would look deep into her eyes and tell her with all seriousness:

‘You will be my heir and lead the clan after me.’

And that would fill Arcania with pride and love, the ultimate strength to follow Cousaturum to the ends of the Sornieth.

With time the seed of dedication had grown in Arcania’s heart, blooming into the garland of love and devotion. When she reached adulthood, she knew that she would do anything for him. Yet she had kept silent for years she couldn’t count, as it behoves the heir to the clan leader. But watching Cousaturum walking alone, a dragon of many children but no mate, she had decided to act and join Cousaturum on his lonely path. For a time Arcania was satisfied, sharing herself whole with the dragon she loved. For a time…

Then the realization came to her. There was a reason why Cousaturum was mateless. His path was a lonely one, for Cousaturum was mated to the clan and she would never take the first place in his heart. She had made a mistake, she would never be his mate. Quietly, she had moved out of his quarters and took residence atop the marble bell tower, choosing solitude over the company of the dragon that could never truly love her.

Presently, she was looking at Cousaturum that was patiently waiting for her to explain. The decision had been made for her. She had to tell him and now was the time to do it. She stood up.
‘Follow me Cousaturum’ she said, and went down to the base of the tower.

Arcania was leading the way. They would pass through the living quarters and common areas, turning into the staircase that lead down to the heart of the lair, where only the most precious things were kept. They passed next to the entrance to the hoard and treasury and finally arrived at the doors to the nesting area. The guard at the door was nodding off, but sprang up to full alert when he saw them. He let them in and now they were standing near the row of nests surrounded with pink crystals and laid with fresh leaves. Most of the nests were now empty, but the last one was not. A single egg was calmly bobbing up and down on invisible currents of magic. Arcania bent down over it, checking if anything needed to be adjusted, then looked at Cousaturum.

‘Yours?’ he asked.

‘Mine’ Arcania answered. ‘And also yours.’

The look on Cousaturum’s face was one of a complete surprise. He didn’t expect this. But then again, the arrival of the egg was a surprise to Arcania too. The time she had spend with him had turned out to be fruitful.

Arcania was watching Cousaturum break away from his stunned stillness. Slowly, he reached out into the nest, tracing the curvature of the egg with tender intensity, as if he was enchanted with its shape. He was now lying down next to it, clearly prepared to keep a vigil. Arcania knew then that her child is going to be greeted into the world with the same sight as she was- a yellow face of a Pearlcatcher, full of patience and acceptance.
