Contemptus mundi.
Holy of holies, this idol poured of wax; see it now, in her austere half-smile, the marble scorn of her cold brow. The piety graven upon the alabaster lines of her face is of the decorative kind found upon certain rigid figures of martyrs and saints, lacking in the fleeting warmth of human flesh. She has a stark northern look, a blackness of eye and pallor of flesh gleaned from those rapacious mercenary ancestors of hers that carved out her family’s path through flesh and bone generations before; great, gleaming black eyes that spoke of the hunger of carrion crows circling the battlefield on their own invisible trapezes, cawing for blood. Her countenance exhibits all the vacancy of a sacred icon; she does not possess any of those tender imperfections that reconcile her stony features with the human condition, her face too heavy with fortitude, too listless with divine penitence. She suffers the toil of living with an ascetic's fervid grace, but for all her piety, she cannot contrive to be so angular, her figure full with the vigour of affluence; a false prophet that cannot divorce herself from earthly pleasure. The suit of ceremonial plate that entombs this saintlike form has the appearance of a martyr's elaborate and bejewelled catafalque, gilded and ornamental. She is a miniature and frail facsimile of her brother, a symbolic inversion, a decorative simulacrum too flimsy for toil or trial. Of the husband buried under a cold marble effigy, the aged mother decaying in some backwater estate, the unloving father long dead, she does not speak; whatever girlish love she bore in her youth are entombed in that crypt-like heart where now only God's solemn litanies reverberate endlessly. She is a chamber of pious sonorities with no door or window; she keeps her lips sealed. |
