I consider myself pretty lucky. I mean who wouldn't want to be born on a soaring island. Hot air balloons and glass chimes and colorful kites filled the air. The younger hatchlings and myself would always have fun days filled with laughter and mirth. The adults would always have something to chatter about and usually ended up laughing by the end of the day.
My favorite spot was on the highest branch of this very old sycamore tree. The wind would blow in my face and would rustle the leaves nearby! Kites would sometimes get stuck in the tree's humongous branches. But I would quickly get them down for the little hatchling who would appear shortly after.
But the best thing from my old sycamore tree was the view. Up here I could see everything. To my left I could see the frigid isle and some spare icebergs melting in the sun. Straight ahead of me I could see floating crystals, and huge forgotten craters, and an endless ocean never without a gentle wave in sight. And lastly to my right I could see great flowing fires, and thunder bolts in the air.
I guess it always was the thunder bolts tha intrigued me. How did dragons fly kites in those conditions? Could hot air balloons even survive a tiny trip without getting struck down? Why did I always feel so sad when I looked over there?
So when I came of age I quickly volunteered to become a representative of our fair land. My destination: a world of thunder and lightning.
I was designated to a clan that lives in a cave next to one of the great lighting posts. And really, there wasn't much to do as a representative. Apparently visiting lands where you can get struck by lightning was not a popular trend. Sure the caves where safe but the journey wasn't as easy.
The only two possessions I took with me was a root from my beloved sycamore tree, as a memento, and my official wind representative scarf (don't wash with hot water!). Some of the young hatchlings were instantly attracted to the colorful hues and bells on it. They would ask about my home and stare at me with dreamy eyes as I told them of kites, and chimes, and hot air balloons.
And then I knew what I had to do. Before they came back, I made a kite and a chime to show them. I couldn't really make a hot air balloon, but I drew a picture. And then those dreamy-eyed hatchlings started asking if I could make more kites and more chimes and pictures so they could have them. I couldn't say no to those adorable faces.
It took all night, but finally I had made 22 kites and 23 complete sets of chimes. An extra chime for myself. You should have seen their joy-- it felt good! So I decided to make scarves for them from whatever I could find. Instead of bells I decorated theirs with pieces of smooth glass and painted patterns on them. Fair to say they were more than happy. I don't think I have ever seen any hatchling take off their scarf since I gave it to them.
I became the local kite, chime, and scarf maker. It made me happy but I missed my old home. I actually took up residence on the highest nook of the cave I could find; right next to the roof opening where fresh air rushes in. One day playing with my chime and looking out to the sky I realized it: This clan needed its own sycamore tree, like the one I had played in during my childhood. A little more green would liven this clan and I had a root of my sycamore tree!
Planting was easy, but getting the root to take was hard. Eventually, with some love and care, I got a tiny sapling and a few leaves. I even placed a chime on one of its tiny branches. Just wait until it grows I thought. And look, it can grow up towards the opening. Won't that look pretty. And what's better is this growing sycamore is already prepared for fall! See its brown leaves are already falling and it's only still summer!
