My aesthetic is highly cluttered dragons because it's the only apparel that fits his in game lore.

Saren owes Shepard. It's that simple. It's why he hasn't killed her yet. Because of her medical knowledge he is himself again. However, because of this he has also had to stick by her to retain any semblence of acceptance from general society. And for that he hates her.

She has given him another chance to prove himself to his bondmate, and for that he is grateful. But because of her he has had to relive the death of his brother, at his own hands.

He can't see their relationship ever going beyond cautious friends. He owes her too much, and she is too wary to fully trust him. In the end, with the amount of disagreements and fights they get into, it's probably best this way, for him to provide her with his experience and for her to use that experience with her biotic prowess to protect those under her care.
