He was once a young, vibrant thing born into the ranks of a warlord’s army. He found little comfort amongst the horde of bedraggled soldiers that were his comrades, for his high-minded nature seemed to make him a living, breathing contradiction to them and their monotonous cycle of existence. From daybreak til dusk he stood shoulder-to-shoulder with these ragged barbarians, locked in battle with rival armies thirsting for control; the air lay heavy with the stench of blood and sweat. Yet this incessant violence was without progress, and battles would leave festering wounds far more often than they would yield the glory and gilded trinkets their leader rasped about. So perhaps it is no surprise that Yngvarr, drunk on hubris, staggered into the damp, rotting barracks and fed the famished souls promises of liberation.
