I’d been waiting for this day for months now. It was the Trickmurk Circus festival week, and I was being crowned by my Clan as our Shadow Flight representative. I had been told a few weeks prior that I would be given the honor because I was the one who was most endowed with Shadow magic, and because Zebra had decided that she would walk a different path in life. More power to her, I guess. In any case, I was definitely excited to be able to become something bigger than the nobody that I was. I was in my room when Skylar, our seamstress, came in to get me fitted for my new outfit: a deck of cards, one of those silly clown neck ruffle things, and some plum plumed apparel. How nice. “How am I supposed to wear the cards?” I asked, looking at them in her hands. They weren't in a bag or attached to a belt or anything; just a deck of cards. I didn't get it. Instead of answering, Skylar threw them to me, and I yelped. My claws were still wet with body paint! However… they never touched my claws, instead floating around me in a plume of smoke. “Ohhhh…” My magic is what controlled them, which made sense. I was the most endowed with it, after all. Skylar helped me get the other apparel on, holding the frill open so I could fit my head through and using the plumed apparel beads to wrap the feathers around my wings and upper body. When she was finished, I turned to look at myself in one of the Nocturne mirrors that I had collected. “You look wonderful,” she said, adjusting the feathers on my wings absently. “Thank you very much,” I responded, chuckling to myself. My clown make-up was probably not the best choice for the coronation. Oh well. “Are you ready?” Skylar asked me. I thought it over. My apparel was on, the Clan was waiting for me and Skylar in the lair, I was pretty sure that my magic was working because I had gotten the cards to float… it was time. “Yes, I am ready,” I decided. “Let's get this road on the show.” The two of us stepped out of my room, and made our way into the lair. Yawing and Nirmala were each standing next to each other, a violet crown on a pillow at Nirmala’s feet. When she saw me, she waved, and Yawing gathered everyone's attention. “Dockson has arrived!” he called to the Clan. Everyone turned to face me and cheered. Well, almost everyone; Bloodbane looked away from me. I guessed he was scared, which was actually pretty funny. I made a mental note as I made my way towards Yawing and Nirmala. “So, how does this work? Do you guys say some words or something?” I asked. “What do you mean? Weren't you here for the last coronation?” Yawing said. “No… I was hunting, remember?” He nodded, and told me to stand in front of him with my head up. I did so, and he moved to stand in front of me. “Dockson,” he began, “your rebirth as a Shadow Dragon begins with this crown. Your magic will become stronger, your heart and soul will transform. You will become new. Do you accept the change into your life?” “Forever and always,” I responded. “This is just something that I will have to accept, I guess. I can deal.” He smiled. “Then, with this Shady Crown, I hereby declare you to be our Clan's Shadow Flight representative: Dockson, the Cursed Clown.” He placed the crown onto my head, and I felt a surge of energy as smoke enveloped me. My forehead tingled familiarly, and I knew exactly why: my emblem had been forged onto my head. I was forever immortalized as my Clan's Shadow Flight rep.
