I knew, that when I died, something was wrong.
I didn't float away from my body, to the waiting arms of my deity, like most dragons believe. I simply shed my skin and circled my corporeal body, staring at the bright pool of red staining the snow around me. The group of roaming, vicious Mirrors who had taken me down were snuffling my lifeless limbs, searching for something to pilfer, no doubt. When they didn't come across anything of value, they scampered away, off to find another hapless victim.
Long after they were gone, I was still there, staring down at my corpse. It was such a strange feeling, watching flies and grubs bury into my dead flesh. I could barely stand to look at it.
After a week or so, I--I mean
my body--began to rot, exposing bones to the biting wind.
I didn't sleep, I didn't eat, I didn't even breathe. For years, all I did was watch my body, forced to follow it wherever the bones rolled. It was both disturbing and horrifically interesting.
One time, the bones somehow wound up in a frigid pond in the Snowsquall Tundra, one that froze in winter but was relatively ice-free in summer. I lay there with my bones for a few months. Fish, at first, were interested in the added bit of scenery, but soon grew bored of swimming through my empty eye sockets. I was growing tired of this life, of year after year spent in the cold grip of death but unable to move beyond my corpse. It was agony.
I remember the day perfectly. The pond was completely frozen through. Nothing stirred within its black depths. Nothing had escaped the frigid hand of winter.
I sensed someone step onto the ice. It wasn't something new or surprising--many hatchlings came here to ice skate with their parents, and dragons would chip off a few blocks to sell in some market on the mainland.
But, when I didn't sense the skittering slide of skates or the heavy chop of a pickaxe, I knew this dragon was here for a different purpose. I watched their dark shadow make its way across the surface of the pond, my heart growing louder with every step they took. Finally, they stopped. They were right on top of me.
Muffled words struggled to penetrate the ice. I strained my ears to make out what they were saying, but I simply couldn't. Then, the strangest thing happened.
I started to breathe.
Crystalline was born like any other dragon. Her parents were two wealthy merchants in a large Ice tribe. They had much influence over their leaders, but little to none over their daughter.
Crystalline was a wild one, always getting into trouble. She loved tussling and play-fighting, and she refused to learn the sly ways of a merchant. Her parents warned her that one day, her love for the dangerous and exciting side of life would get her in trouble. And they were right.
She had a fight with her father over the ethics of lying about the quality of a selling object, and she stormed out of their cave in a huff. The air was sweet and chilly, but the sky was clear. No storm in sight. Satisfied with her safety, she stomped off, muttering under her breath.
It was within an hour, after she started to get a rein on her emotions, that she noticed she was being followed by a group of dragons. She picked up her pace, but the dragons were soon upon her. They murdered her and left her body in the snow.
But her spirit never strayed far from her bones. For years, she was dragged where they went.
Some bones disintegrated over time, others simply disappeared. She wondered what would happen to her if they all disappeared.
One day, as her bones were lying in a frozen pond, a necromancer stepped onto the ice. They made their way over to her, and then chanted a spell that brought her remaining bones up, rearranged to fit where they would have been so long ago, clad in never-melting ice.
When her mind finally was able to stop reeling from how she could finally move, she realized that the dragon had disappeared without a trace. She assumes she'll never know why they raised her from the dead. Perhaps they sensed her restless spirit and thought that giving her a new life was the only chance for her to finally be at rest.
She was happy, for the first time in years. She was able to go places, do things, eat food, talk to dragons. Everyone she met gave her second, third glances, but most didn't question her strange appearance. There were plenty of other dragons that were far weirder.

Soon, though, she decided to test the limits of the necromancer's spell. She traveled to a Fire clan and was shocked to find that the ice stayed just as frosty as it had in the Southern Icefield. Unlikely IcyForest's steaming scales, Crystalline's just acted like... ice. Her body was completely solid and showed no signs of melting.
Although she had gone to the clan on a whim, she ultimately decided to remain with the dragons. She found it comforting, that after a few days, everyone stopped staring at her. She became... one of them. It felt like she was home. Like she belonged. And that was a feeling that she hadn't felt for a very, very long time.
Crystalline never shed her love for wildness and excitement. Even in her bulkier, less agile form, she still loves to take long jogs, pick fights, and hunt. And now, she's almost impervious to pain. She feels twinges that alert her that something is stabbing her, but she doesn't writhe in agony to a wound that might have killed her. No blood and no screams, except for her opponent's.
At first, she held tightly onto her story, not willing to speak of it to anyone. However, as time went on, her grasp loosened, as did her tongue. She began to spread her story, to awed hatchlings and skeptical elders. Although she claims that she is older than most of the dragons in her clan, no one really believes her. Except for Itta, Honoo's second mate, who stares into her eyes with a solemn expression, as if she sees past them and into her soul. It's unnerving and strangely comforting at the same time.
As time has worn on, Crystalline has tired of her own existence. She's haunted by her years spent torn between life and death and sorrowfully acknowledges that everyone she knew is now dead, has been for so long.
She left her parents on a sour note. Her last words to them were, "You don't care about anyone! How could you do something like that?" before she stormed away.
And she's tormented by a thought. She doesn't sustain any injuries and the ice that keeps her together never melts. Is she immortal now? Will she never see her parents again? Will she never get her chance to apologize?
No one knows the answer to this question. Only time will tell if this animated, trapped skeleton will ever find the peace she has been searching for all these years...
