There was a before and then there was an after; in the middle, there was nothing but blood and chains. Anguish flowered into poisonous anger, a hatred for the very essence of life itself. Lillim hid her name behind her tongue and spoke with a voice of acid and fire.

She was a slave, not a person, and she expected to die as one. Often she was reminded of where she would find herself in the end; a nameless corpse, defiled and forgotten, face down in the muck. Who wouldn't grow to loathe the sun overhead and the earth beneath their feet, knowing hope to be a luxury only others were afforded?

Sunk so deep in hate, she was an easy target for the Shade. Its followers gained ownership of her and planned, in all their vilest intentions, to make use of her body and soul. Were she to become one of their sickly hoard, she would be welcomed. Were she to perish... she would be a glorious sacrifice.

Caspian found her in the depths of a mine, chained and close to death. Feral, driven by only her own growing darkness, one step from a Shade-touched herself. If she closes her eyes, Lillim can recall the feeling of his shining blade against her bare throat.

He hesitated.

Beneath the hate, there was sorrow. Beneath the anger, the smallest, most forgotten glimmer of faith. He's never told her why he spared her life and dragged her from that mine, back into the sun. Maybe the Lightweaver spoke to him that day and told him something she has yet to comprehend. Maybe he was just good.

Whatever the case, Lillim did not die that day. Or any day thereafter, either. She lived and learned, grew from the darkness. The Shade still coos to her from its pit of emptiness, hungry for her to fall once more into its grasp.

Lillim no longer feels drawn to that endless void; she hunts it now, its enemy rather than its prey.
