Biography

The Vulture

The landscape was quiet. Earthworms dotted the rocks, shying away from the rivulets of rain water from the previous night. A small dragon, only a few months old, was already exploring the land. And silently, he searched.
It didn't take long to find his mission, for he began to reach behind a rock and pull on the treasure behind it. His small claws produced a broken coin bottle, which he tucked away into a pouch hanging from his person.
"Smoke," a voice called softly from the rocks high above. The little dragon looked up to see a deep indigo Pearlcatcher perched upon the jutting stones like a falcon. "Tidesong says dinner's ready."
"I'll be there, Starsinger."
She hesitates for just a moment, then turns and darts back into the lair.
Only a few minutes pass before Smoke does too.

-some years later-

"So, Smoke," Starsinger begins casually, pulling roots from the damp earth with nimble claws. "You see the rocks at the stream in the Driftwood Drag?"
"Which one?"
"The one with the split tree in the water."
"Oh, sure. I was there a few months ago, but an angry Mirror chased me off, saying it was her land. Did you see her?"
"I thought it was Tidesong." They share a quick laugh.
"I didn't end up collecting them. Besides, I much prefer scavenging in the Fishspine Reef. It's more colorful, and the locals were very nice."
"Easy for you to disregard the Tangled Wood. Someone who wasn't born there like you wouldn't be able to appreciate it." She fakes a haughty sniff, but the curl of her lip betrays her true emotion. Smoke gives her a soft smile, but says nothing more.
Quietly, they finish foraging, and Starsinger slings the bag of greens around her arm. "Another day done," she says mildly.
Smoke turns his head, giving the creek one last look before a sharp glint catches his eye. "Wait," he says quickly, approaching the other end of the creek. He slides through the freezing water, but his attention was caught, and the temperature of the water didn't cross his mind.
"Smoke?"
He reaches the opposite side of the creek and brushes away reeds, searching.
"What is it? What do you see?" Instead of stopping him, his partner slowly glides over the water and to the other side, settling down on the grassy bed. She peers into the brush.
Smoke slowly pulls out the hidden treasure. A brown basket constructed of sticks was nothing, but what was inside was more valuable than a gilded chest.
Starsinger peers inside and slowly exhales. "A Light egg," she whispers.

Smoke and Starsinger bound into the camp, several dragons alarmed at their frantic pace. The basket grasped firmly between Smoke's teeth, the two enter Tidesong's office.
"Tidesong," Starsinger says quickly. A blue head pops out of the corner from a pile of coals, and the Mirror's four orange eyes narrow as she takes in their hurried appearances. "While foraging," she continues, "by a small creek in the Sundial Ruins, Smoke found this basket in the reeds."
Smoke sets down the basket on Tidesong's desk, next to a pile of nickel ore. The leader nudges the lid open, but her expression doesn't change when she sees its contents.
"And what do you want me to do about it?"
"We thought you would want to know," Smoke stammers. "As the leader, you can decide what to do with it. If you want to sell it, or just let it hatch, or..."
The Mirror dragon looks up at the two. "You both found it. You get to decide. And if you keep it, I'm not the one raising it, so I don't care."

"Starsinger, I'm not a dad!" Smoke blurts as soon as they're outside. "We're reasonable, right? We can't raise kids, but we can make money. We need money to keep running this place! A little... hatchling would just get in the way, right? Right?"
"Smoke," Starsinger begins, "there's a little dragon in there who needs parents. We couldn't guarantee that that hatchling will get loving parents if they get sold away. Besides, I know you. You are a great person. You can teach this little hatchling so many things. You would raise them so well."
"Starsinger..." Smoke says, his voice breaking.
"Smoke," she says quietly. "I also know you well enough to know that you don't want to be tied down. But we can do this. And we will try. We will raise this little dragon to be the best they can be."
"You really want this, don't you?" he says softly.
"I do."
He stills, then says, "Okay."

-some weeks later-

As the sun set on the Ashfall Waste, sending bright rays of orange and gold through the sky, a couple watched their young son scamper through the rocks, teasing the water-phobic earthworms that sat on the stones. The indigo Pearlcatcher broke her gaze away from the hatchling to look at her partner.
"This was the right decision, Smoke."
"I know," he says, then casts his gaze over to her. "Do you think he'll leave, like the others?"
"Do you?"
He looks back at their son. "Melody," he says softly, his son's name melting on his tongue like softened butter. "No, I don't think so."
Starsinger smiles to herself, then looks away.
And so, Melody stayed.
