One would expect a dream demon to be more frightening than Somnys appears. Most picture a terrifying beast or a dragon who wears a hood and sulks in shadows. Even something as ridiculous as a floating yellow triangle in a top hat is closer to what you’d expect then the soft and friendly nocturne who loves the color blue. Despite first impressions, Somnys definitely is a dream demon- a creature with the ability to enter and consume any kind of dream. Somnys loves eating nightmares, so his clanmates never have trouble with those, as he is eager to help them out and eat them. While he does enjoy helping his clanmates with by eating their nightmares, the main reason he loves them so much is the flavor, or rather, the color. Somnys has synesthesia, more specifically, he sees different flavors as different colors. The taste of most nightmares tends to be in the light blue range, but it depends on the dream itself. Dark chocolate also has a color he practically likes. He does not need to eat food like regular dragons, but can and does enjoy the occasional treat. Some dragons think he is rather weird because of this, so Somnys doesn’t mention is synesthesia often. He is only open about it with close friends, which is rather strange for the friendly dragon.
Somnys is a dream analyst and helps his clanmates find the hidden meanings in the dreams he doesn’t eat. The dreams Somnys eats are forgotten by the dreamer, but remembered by Somnys. Sometimes he’ll even talk to them about dreams he ate if he thinks they are significant enough. Many don’t think much of his services either doubting the importance of dreams or thinking they know enough about themselves to figure it out themselves. Somnys still gets quite a few customers, including novice prophets who are unused to their powers. Somnys’ friendly nature means that his customers tend to warm up to him quickly. Somnys does not need to sleep so he spends the majority of his nights talking to the unfortunate guards who got night shift. He gets along with most of the guards that regularly do night-shift, and a few who don’t. The rest of the time he spends feeding which while not something that takes long, he has to do every night. He learned to move silently as to not wake up potential dreamers. Somnys has gotten very good at this, and can move so quietly and quickly not even the most observant can see him. Somnys can sense who is having a dream, and whether that dream is a nightmare or not, so he has no problem tracking down food in the dark of night. Most of the clan knows not to fear him as he helps them by getting rid of their nightmares, but the younger hatchlings fear him because all they see in the dark of night is a shadowy figure creeping silently. Most hatchlings don’t fear Somnys himself but the ‘dream demon’ whether they think he simply turns into one when night falls or the dream demon is a different entity entirely, it takes some time for the hatchlings to outgrow this mentality. Somnys doesn’t like hatchlings because of this, but can stand them. It’s more that the hatchlings often see him as some sort of monster more than a dragon. |
