Despite being the son of Colonel Straylight, he never entered the military formally. Instead he sought a different method of protecting the kingdom and the proper inheritance of the throne. He entered the palace guard and became the Wielder of the Red Sword. It was an official position from the days of old, when those in the royal family were in the habit of killing each other to take the throne. The Wielder of Red Sword is the only member of the Court who may kill a member of the royal family. It is their solemn duty to protect the citizens against tyrants and the King or Queen from treacherous relatives.

He is a man of pure principle. He cannot be bought. He is a man of great courage and strength. He cannot be beaten or intimidated. He learned how to wield a sword from his cousin, Major Beaumont, and is said to be the only one who has ever beaten him in a duel. He is a cold, prickly fellow. His gaze is so intense it is said it can be felt from across a room if he so wishes. His mere existence is enough to dissuade the more distant relatives from even hatching plans let alone coming to visit the Palace.

But that was all before. Before he had to choose between doing his duty and harming the only person he had ever loved. He had the great misfortune of falling in love with Duchess Sanura, whose brother, Duke Raphael, sought to take the crown through terrible violence. He heard of the plans soon enough to put a halt to them, but as he marched through the gates to put and end to Duke Raphael, Duchess Sanura threw herself at William's feet and begged him to spare her brother. She begged William not to kill Raphael, but only have him exiled from the Court. The only thing she wanted was for her brother to have a chance to change.

William's heart was torn, for Sanura's eyes were filled with the deepest of sorrows. He felt if he killed Raphael, she would also die. Perhaps not in body, but in spirit. He thought also of all she would endure in the Court after what her brother had planned came to light. Silently, he unbuckled his sword and threw it in front of her. He knew that if he could not carry out his duty, then he could not carry the sword. He went to the Queen and asked her to quietly exile Raphael, so as not to bring shame on his family. He then asked to be exiled himself, only to return if Raphael returned and fulfill the duty that he had shirked. The Queen agreed, though she was sad to find what had transpired.

During his last night in the Court, William penned a letter to Sanura.
It held only one sentence.
"As thou desires, it shall be done."

He faced Raphael one last time and swore to him that if he so much as laid his eyes on the road to the Court, that he would descend at once and strike him down. Raphael said nothing to him reply, only giving him a mocking bow. From there, William set out to find his new place in the world.
