Biography

T H E - R E C T OR

History

From day one, Nikolai was a natural-born leader, though he never really wanted to be. In fact, he considered it a burden for the longest time. Somehow, he always found himself in the position of leadership. He never understood why other dragons were so drawn to him, until he realized that the Plaguebringer herself wrought him from her own filth and sickness. His purpose was to spread her rot and disease across the lands, through war and infection.

With that knowledge, he accepted his position begrudgingly, fighting as a sergeant of sorts on her behalf. He was successful, but he was never truly happy with his duties as a Plague-smitten barbarian chieftain. While violence alleviated him, it served no other purpose than just scratching an itch. Her blessings had otherwise done nothing but hurt him. Even warfare was more like an unfortunate addiction. An ill-fated necessity.

The goddess's 'blessing' left him susceptible to the scorching sun of the Scarred Wasteland. As he patrolled the Wandering Contagion, he burned under the cruel star's radiation. Cancer formed tumors and tore ulcers throughout his colorless skin. It was agonizing; he bled more from sickness than from any injury he ever received from the enemy. The pain was too much for him to bare alone, so he tried to mitigate it with the poison of corpsemaker ivy. He consumed the purple leaves in hopes they would dull the pain, which they did. However, it proved to be a double-edge sword. Not only did it dull the pain and most of his other senses, he became addicted to the poison.

He then had two addictions: violence and poison.

While most Plague dragons relished their afflictions, seeing them as evidence of their strength and ability to overcome any physical obstacle that might beset them, Nikolai just saw it as needless suffering. He thought long and hard over the course of his servitude, then decided he was just too miserable under the goddess. He knew he had leave. When he told his barbarian followers, their true loyalties proved to be to the goddess, not him. They chased him into the lands of the Arcanist.

All but one followed him with tooth and claw far into the outskirts and then the Starfell Isles. It was Basaltica. She continued to wound him in a fit of rage, but she did not slay him when she should (and very well could) have. Instead, she wished to serve at his side, never the one to betray her chieftain. And though he was her Charge, it didn't change the fact she was still angry with him and what she saw as his own betrayal of the goddess.

She helped him lick his wounds as they decided where to go next. Nikolai didn't want to remain in the Starfell Isles forever. Thinking that cold meant less sun, he considered the Southern Icefield a good candidate. His first thought was the Viridian Labyrinth, but he didn't want to pass through the Scarred Wastelands to reach it-- it goes without mentioning he was afraid of how the Nature-loving denizens would react to a Plague dragon in their midst. So afraid, he didn't even consider how furious Basaltica would be if he pledged allegiance to the Gladekeeper! The Tangled Wood seemed even better-- it was dark and shaded, but he would still have to pass through the Scarred Wastelands to get there, and he didn't have the energy to trek through any longer routes.

The Icefield was Plan C, but it wasn't too terrible a Plan C, was it? The collectors of Ice largely kept to themselves, and that's all he wanted.

As they passed through the lands of the Arcane, they met a coatl named Amethystos. He was interested in studying the preserved remains in the glacial masses for some research project Nikolai didn't get the obsession with a bunch of old skeletons, but accepted the tag-a-long anyways, as he always did.

They found rest in the Frigid Floes. Despite being a Guardian, Nikolai did not know how to swim. While it was uncomfortable, it was still better than living surviving the Wandering Contagion.

The cool weather helped to numb his ulcerated tumors, but it was still just as bright, if not brighter because of the ice's reflective qualities. It didn't help that soon Light dragons made up half his clan either, but through the combined efforts of clan's Shadow dragons and spell-casters, he ekes out a tolerable existence.

Though he still possesses the crassness of a Plague dragon and the laconicism of a barbarian warrior, the influence of Icewarden helped to slowly mature him into a rational, thoughtful leader-- one whose brutality is practicality and brusqueness is breviloquence. Though he still neglects his responsibility as a true patriarch, he instead opts for that of a judge than a proper authoritarian figure. While he doesn't actively seek out alliances or new members, his lair mates often insist on reaching out for other draconic resources, to which his jurisdiction is penultimate. As a leader, that is good enough for him.

As time goes on, he became more and more ingratiated to the Icewarden and seeks to exalt dragons to his service, if only as a simple thanks for allowing a Plague progenitor like him take refuge in his domain. He use to secretly resent the Icewarden because his firstborn was exalted Unnamed as a child to his service, but he no longer bears any ill-will towards him and will continue to send dragons to the Fortress on Ends. Nikolai still craves Dominance, no matter which Flight he is in.

But even sometimes he misses the Plaguebringer, like a beaten child misses their abusive parent.

Personality

Nikolai is a very lassie-faire clan leader and believes that the each dragon he allows in his clan are better at governing themselves than he ever could. Instead, he is more of an arbiter of disputes and deals alike. Ultimately, all the dragons in the clan are supplicant to him, and Basaltica makes sure of that. However, he isn't cruel. Perhaps in his younger years he could be thoughtless, but now he's far more careful. With so many dragons to do his bidding now, he has the time for rumination. It's hard to describe a Plague dragon as ugly as Nikolai as 'just' or 'fair', but these are accurate descriptors of the old drake.

Aside from his role of clan leader, he generally likes to simply relax, but he isn't lazy. In fact, his favorite job is training exaltees and hunting for the clan. After all, this is what he was made for; just for a different god. Unfortunately for the Plaguebringer, she made him a little too good at what he does.
