______It was cold. It was the coldest winter in years of the Tangled Wood, and Revion watched his breath crystallize with each exhale as he walked along side Erza. They shouldn’t have been out in such conditions, but Erza had a knowing that something was out there in the snow. He followed his unseeing mate blindly through the blizzard to the side of an old, rotting tree. The tree’s ancient, crooked bark was falling away and stood out in the white snow. Gently, Erza moved the bark from the snow.

______There she was, a single flower sheltered from the cold by death.

______Erica was such a small flower when they found her, the red of her petals being leached by ice and snow. The first flowers were not expected for months yet, but she was different. Resilient. Her roots grew deep in the warm death of the old tree as she grew, her only conversation was the silent snow that drifted for a while. It wasn’t from many nights after the thaw came and the mushrooms began to glow again that green returned to the Tangled Wood.

______But Erica’s seductive red flowers, fed by death, still held stark contrast from the emerging life of the spring-awakened forest.
