Фридем назвали в честь матери - обе драконихи выделяются среди соплеменников своей чешуёй цвета закатного солнца и небесно-голубыми крыльями, за что обе получили имена, олицетворяющие свободу. Хоть окрасом Фридем и похожа на мать, характером она пошла в отца - гиперактивная и несерьезная - ей потребовалось много времени и ещё больше взбучек от Фривинг, чтобы повзрослеть.
Из-за усиленного контроля со стороны своей строгой матери, Фридем никогда не чувствовала сильной связи с ней. Гораздо ближе ей был её отец - простой и приземлённый Крастлег, который не пытался сделать из свой дочери идеал, в отличие от своей принципиальной супруги. Фридем видела и всё то рвение, с которым её двоюродная сестра Берилл пыталась угодить своей тёте. Это не то, что она стала бы уважать, но и не то, что могла бы ненавидеть. Хотя интересы сестёр и расходились в противоположных направлениях, в одном они были солидарны - они обе хотели бы поменяться ролями в глазах Фривинг.
Фридем отлично ладит со своими двоюродными сестрами Торн и Фё, и часто составляет им компанию в делах. Когда Фридем узнала о влюблённости Фё в Берилл, то попыталась отговорить подругу от этой затеи, но со временем поняла, что союз может пойти обеим драконихам на пользу.
