Few have ever seen the elusive Hiken, owner of the Teatro Uccello di Fuoco, in person. His masked face grins on every advertisement for the opera house, but the dragon himself only appears on the Teatro’s opening nights-- the most coveted in Levitos. As one might imagine, rumors swirl like smoke about the enigmatic Imperial. From the strange-but-believable (“he wears a cape of firebird feathers!”) to the downright outlandish (“he’s a crystal statue come to life!”), Hiken has heard it all.

He doesn’t mind. In fact, Hiken carefully preserves his eccentric public image. His public appearances are carefully calculated to make as much of an impact as possible, to get dragons talking. The more dragons talk, the more tickets sell, and the more tickets sell, the more treasure he makes. Someday he’ll be able to hang up the mask and retire with that treasure, able to focus on his passion for opera without all the pizazz. For now, though, the show must go on. As any opera-goer knows, it ain’t over until the Snapper sings
