Gallant died quite young. The dragon who killed him was also dead, and was ravaging with hunger and malicious intent. Gallant knows, because he felt it too, when he first awoke. He directed it at the only dragon near him, lunging for her with an unbearable need to feed from her life and warmth. Before he could harm her though, her voice cut through his irrationality and he heard the words she was speaking. He could not understand her, but his mind came back to him, and his hunger slipped away. She was Dust, a necromancer from the lands of wind. She had found him just in time, easing his passage back into life so the monster he was meant to become did not take hold.
A strange romance formed between them. Gallant needs Dust to maintain his survival and soul. She in turn has found the only mate she could endure, as a true living mate would sicken under her affections.
Tragically, their babies do not fare well. Any born alive have become sick and barely made it into adulthood before Dust has had no choice but to bring their souls mercy by ushering them to the Flamecaller. Still, they both hope for a normal life. The Dolman clan gives them respite, and Casanova has offered them protection from persecution in exchange for small, simple tasks. They did not mind helping get rid of Dirge. Both have done worse in their time.
