SunShadow Colony Lore (Warning: very long)

Background

Lumi was born to a small colony of nocturnes who had chosen to migrate from their ancestral home to The Sea of a Thousand Currents. Although it was originally difficult for them to survive in a land that was mainly aquatic, they found that they were able to be quite comfortable residing in the Tsunami Flats, where they mimicked the dragons that burrowed into the sand there. The colony's original motives for moving to a land so different from the Tangled wood was that they believed The Tidelord to be a much stronger ruler, and agreed with his ideologies. However, as generation after generation was born within the colony, the members increasingly began to resemble the personality and behaviors of those within the water flight, until it became that this group of nocturnes were indecipherable from the original water-element dragons (guardian dragons) residing there. Some of the guardian dragons living within the region took nocturnes as their charges, and efficiently integrated themselves into the colony.

The Beginning

Like the majority of the other dragons within her colony, Lumi reflected a mixture of the guardian dragon culture the colony had adopted, as well as the small amount of nocturne culture that was still taught. Growing up, she was led to believe that she was a lot larger than she actually was, and stubbornly got into small skirmishes with the guardian hatchlings, she'd play with. She was also extremely curious and loved getting into things that she had no business with, especially when it came to gaining new knowledge. Lumi was completely fascinated by the older guardians who knew how to practice ancient water magic, and although her colony banned the information from nocturnes, she went out of her way to learn it from them in secret.

At the beginning of Lumi's first winter as an adult dragon, she chose to embark on the traditional quest guardian's take to search for their charge. Although technically, it wasn't required of nocturnes within her clan to take the journey, some still did so anyway, and Lumi was determined to impress the old guardians she'd learned water magic from. There were several lands out-skirting the Tidelord's realm for her to travel to, but she found that her heart beckoned her to travel east. And thus, Lumi found herself in the Sunbeam Ruins.

Her Charge

Lumi’s first few days within the Sunbeam Ruins were quite uncomfortable for her, and if it weren’t for her dedication to her quest, she would have definitely turned around and gone home. Though she should have expected it from the name, there was nowhere in the land that light did not touch, and it greatly disturbed her innate instinct to hide herself during the day. Things got worse for her on the fifth day of her journey, when she accidentally got tangled in a trap intended for smaller flying prey. Extremely exhausted, injured, and humiliated beyond words, Lumi barely struggled to free herself, and instead allowed herself to simply dangle in the poky net awhile she drifted in and out of slumber.

Although it is hard for her to describe the amount of time that passed by, on what Lumi assumed to be the second day, she awoke and found that she was now on the ground, and the largest dragon she’d ever seen was gazing down at her, curiously. She was ready to panic, assuming that perhaps dragons of the light-flight weren’t so keen on unwelcomed guests. But to her surprise, the imperial actually had soft green eyes instead of golden ones, and his laugh was great and rumbling, though equally soft in tone. He didn’t eat her as she had expected, but actually released her and lead her back to a quiet part of the ruins he’d claimed for himself. He shared the real prey he’d caught that night and introduced himself as Cadfael. He explained that he’d left his birth colony because they were running out of space, and journeyed to the light realm in hopes of finding a new group of Imperials to join. None of the colonies were very open to having more members, however, so he had spent most of the month he’d been there on his own.

Lumi felt it made the most sense to remain in the presence of this big, but kind dragon, so she remained at his side as they searched through the light realms for a new colony together. Neither of them was too surprised when Lumi ended up asking him if he’d be her charge. Although in typical charge-protector relationships, the protector (guardian dragon) was much larger than the protectee, Lumi felt as though she wanted him to be a permanent companion regardless, so she could do her best to look out for him. Much to her delight, Cadfael gave a joyful, booming laugh in response to her request, and stated that he would love to be guarded by the fearsome little nocturne, even if she barely reached his knee.

The SunShadow Colony

Lumi and Cadfael’s days journeying through the light realm together were filled with joy. They fine-tuned their battle skills together through hunting flora and fauna, and Lumi was able to further develop her water magic skills through the books she found abandoned in some parts of the ruins. However, deep in their hearts, they still both longed for something more. Some nights, even when they curled up together in Cadfael’s hideaway, they still felt the stirrings of loneliness in their hearts, and instinctively knew the explanation behind their disrest. Lumi and Cadfael still needed more dragons.

So, one morning, the draconic pair fixed up their hideaway so it could be more accommodating to others, and went on a new quest. They traveled to other lands this time, taking in whatever dragons that were willing to join them, whether their colony was too large or they were banished. Soon, they had a little group, and neither of them felt the stirrings of loneliness any longer. They decided to name their group “The SunShadow Colony” since it was tucked away underneath one of the large structures of the ruins to provide comfort to the night-dwelling members.
