Lore

Hematite is a grizzled old dragon, a mass of lumps, scars and odd bumps where bones have been broken a few too many times. Never much of a looker, he became solitary by nature, preferring to mock from afar rather than try to understand.

As he grow older, he grew bored and lonely, causing him to become ever more grouchy and resentful. Perpetually broke, he put his name out as a mercenary, offering to work for anyone who would pay. To his great surprise, the contract was taken up not by a dragon, but by a clan of Raptorik, who were being assaulted by a local dragon clan over a gem deposit buried under their nesting grounds.

He accepted the contract not out of any love for the Beastclan, but the fact that he disdained everyone equally. However, instead of sending him in to wreak havoc on the small clan or rough up their members, the Raptorik attacked alongside him, and even instructed him not to cause any permanent harm. Seeing the brave little creatures fighting together made the old Snapper smile, and he was surprised to find he was enjoying their company.

Once the Raptorik had subdued the small clan, they tried to reason with the leader. Apparently they had done so many times before and been ignored, leading them to force to prove themselves worthy of the dragon's respect. At least, that had been the idea. The dragons merely spat and swore vengeance for the embarrassment, saying such horrible things about frying Raptorik eggs that some started crying.

At that point, Hematite decided enough was enough, and after a bit of pummeling and a lot of roaring in the leader's face, the clan packed up and moved to a location far away.
Hematite stayed on with the now-safe Raptorik, saying it was 'only to make sure they didn't come back.' However, he stayed on far to long for that to be a believable tale.
His new friends softened his demeanor somewhat, and though he is still an ugly old grouch, at least he has a respect for others and is willing to learn about them.

In the Beastclan Defenders, he likes to deal with problems quickly and physically, dropping into couriers or scouts and intimidating them into revealing information in a timely manner, or waiting in the darkness to counter assassins which the group has been tipped off about. He wears armour to protect himself, but covers it with fluffy wraps made by his Longneck friends, designed to muffle any clinking as he moves through the darkness.
